i use only hp ink cartridges.  current ink levels show half-full.  lately, printing quality is terrible.  i am constantly cleaning the printerhead.  i get one good copy and then it's bad again,  any thoughts?

thanks for your help.  although according to the readings, there seemed to be plenty of ink in the cartridges, after repeated cleanings and alignings, the ink levels were finally so low that i replaced all the ink cartridges and that seems to have fixed the problem.

Hi @bigstimpycat,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand how frustrating that becomes, especially when you finally hear the printer start smoothly, get one clean, crisp page, and then the very next print fades, streaks, or loses quality again.

Since different HP printers use different printhead systems and maintenance steps, could you please share the exact printer model number first? That will help me provide the correct troubleshooting specific to your printer.

In the meantime, please try these basic recommended steps:

  1. Make sure the printer is using genuine HP ink cartridges only.
  2. Run the printer’s built-in:
    • Clean Printhead
      Examples of a test page
    • Then Align Printhead
  3. Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Report after cleaning.
  4. Avoid running repeated cleaning cycles back-to-back, as excessive cleaning can sometimes overheat or stress the printhead temporarily.
  5. Check whether the issue appears:
    • On color prints only,
    • Black prints only,
    • Or both.

Official HP print quality troubleshooting guide: HP DeskJet 2600, 2700, 4100, 4800 printers - No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issues ...

A few common causes for the symptoms you described are:

  • A partially clogged printhead,
  • Air trapped in the ink system,
  • A failing printhead,
  • Or a cartridge venting issue where ink flow briefly works and then fades again.

Once you share the exact HP printer model and, if possible, a photo of one of the bad print samples, I can guide you with the correct next steps for that specific printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
