The printer was idle for a month or so when it ran low on cyan and magenta ink. Bought a new set of ink, only replaced the two that were called out. Now it says the magenta is out, replaced that and now it says the "The original HP ink in one or more of the cartridges has been depleted. If they were sold to new, genuine HP cartridges, they might be counterfeit..."
It's a brand new cartridge, in an HP box from Target. I would just drop the printer in the trash can, but with the new ink cartridges, want to get some return on the investment.
I've tried all of the steps that HP asks you to do, taking out the cartridge and wiping off the contacts, moving the cartridge carriage around, shutting off the unit multiple times. Comes back to the same message every time.

Hi @Disappointed202,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It can be frustrating to encounter issues with your printer, especially after replacing the ink cartridges. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem.
Restart the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes.
- Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and check if the error persists.
Update Firmware:
- Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware. You can visit the HP website and download the latest firmware for your Officejet Pro 8615 model. Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the firmware.
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Make sure the cartridges are properly installed. Open the printer cover, remove the cartridges, and then reseat them carefully.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the carriage. Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water for cleaning. Make sure to dry them thoroughly before reinstalling.
Check for Protective Strips:
- Ensure that there are no protective strips or tapes left on the new ink cartridges. Sometimes, people forget to remove these protective covers, which can interfere with proper ink flow.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
- Wait for a few minutes.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.
Check Cartridge Expiry Date:
- Ensure that the ink cartridges are not expired. Check the expiration date on the cartridge packaging.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Alden,
I appreciate the attempt to help my problem. So far none of it has worked. I haven't been able to update the firmware for some reason. I have downloaded the latest version, run the application and it gets to a screen called "HP Printer Update _ HP Officejet Pro 8610". The SW locates the printer, but does not allow me to click the box so it can update. I have tried it through the HP print app and with the printer directly connected to the computer. Same response with both.
