Hi @Linda350,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing too much toner being used by your HP Color LaserJet MFP 178nw, there are a few settings and adjustments you can check to help resolve the issue:
Print Quality Settings:
- From the Printer Control Panel:
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Setup" menu.
- Go to "Print Quality" or "Print Settings".
- Look for an option related to "Toner Density" or "Print Density" and adjust it to a lower setting.
- From Your Computer:
- Open the document you want to print.
- Go to "Print" and select your HP Color LaserJet MFP 178nw as the printer.
- Click on "Properties" or "Preferences".
- Look for a section like "Quality" or "Advanced".
- Adjust the "Print Quality" setting to "Draft" or "Normal" instead of "Best".
Toner Cartridge Check:
- Make sure that the toner cartridges are installed correctly and are not leaking. Remove each toner cartridge and gently shake it to distribute the toner evenly, then reinsert them.
Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, issues with toner usage can be addressed through firmware updates.
- Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your printer model and follow the instructions to update if necessary.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Run a cleaning or maintenance cycle from the printer’s menu to ensure that there are no issues causing excess toner to be applied.
Paper Type:
- Use the correct type of paper for your print job. Some types of paper may require different toner settings, and using the right paper can help with toner usage.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
