HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I installed a new genuine HP cartridge earlier this week and received the "Older Generation Cartridge" error message. My printer is older than the cartridge but has been working fine until the last firmware update. After searching for other user experience/workarounds I followed guidance to update the firmware with a prior version. That worked! Printer was working great! I thought I turned off automatic update for firmware, but no, firmware got updated anyway, and now I cannot repeat the firmware downgrade, or find another workaround for the "Older Generation Cartridge message". When I try to access the maintenance menu on printer touch screen, a white background with a red HP circle logo appears with "No Menus Available" in red below that. I can initiate a firmware update via USB cable connection, printer touchscreen reacts by changing to a dark blue background with a different silver/blue HP logo in the center, after awhile it turns mostly white with "Verifying" text onscreen in a circle. Consistenly, an "update failed" message appears in software update panel on the computer via USB cable, "please turn printer off and on and try again." It's just not going to work. Is anybody working on a firmware update (in my case looking for rev higher than EDWINXPP 1N002.2151A.00) that removes this flaw?

Followup, "Older Generation Cartridge" message on printer display is "stuck" -- the red / white "minus" icon top left that would ordinarily dismiss the message does nothing.

In other words, the firmware update glitch appears to make this error a hard stop / printer initialization is fuxxored.

Inserting used / empty black cartridges gets a little farther into initialization but not long enough to let me configure wireless connection. It does not create the same "older generation cartridge" roadblock sequence, end result is effectively the same but a glimmer of hope of getting a workaround, on evaluating old cartridge  as empty, onscreen message says "only use if you're sure this cartridge is not empty" .. if I can get it refilled at my local Costco and NOT get the "Older Generation Cartridge" one-finger salute, I've got a working printer maybe?

Side note, wanting to configure wireless is hoped-for additional access to EWS options with firmware. Not a lot-hoped-for, but something, anything, feels like progress, likely time better spent shopping for a non-HP replacement huh.

Update (old news to some, new to me) Costco exited instore cartridge refill operations more than a year ago. Here's me thinking they did this because Covid. Um, not. Sorry.

Presented without comment, a content creator response to Youtube video on topic, user asking about the precise error message relevant to several users here:

"The firmware update you currently have in the machine is disregarding any cartridge with a warranty/expiry date of 2020 and before. You have to purchase a cartridge with a date 2021 and beyond."

OK one comment, the unused, genuine HP 952XL black cartridge I loaded initially (and which worked fine, after the firmware was downgraded) had a warranty ends date of 2019/05

I have a different unused, genuine HP 952XL black cartridge with warranty end date of 09/2021

On restart with the newer black cartridge firmware did not reject that cartridge BUT,

evidently after many attempts restarting / resetting printer, color cartridges that were low but not empty are now kaput.

So best guess as of now is, latest firmware inflicts harm, the "older generation cartridge" is misleading  (on purpose?)

A reasonable reaction to this kind of message is **bleep** HP this is a genuine HP exact match to the cartridges that have always worked, older generation wait WHAT?

Anyone so bored or unlucky to still be reading can check warranty end date on any genuine HP cartridges they're preparing to install to see if they have warranty end 2020 or older.

Those cartridges

1) would almost certainly work fine if firmware is not updated to the latest, or

2) if user is able to downgrade to a known to be older-cartridge-friendly firmware, you know, "for testing purposes"
Try and get this correct on first try after making absolutely sure printer firmware settings "check for updates" option is set to "never".

Good luck y'all.

Kinda gave up on HP follow through on this, got a private message today suggesting I call the 800 support number. So, um, I guess I'll try that. Thanks for giving it a push. Better late than never right?
