My 9015e is set up wirelessly. When I scan it will only give me image files to save to. I want to save as a PDF. How do I get this to save a scan as a PDF?

Welcome to the HP Community --

The printer supports scanning PDF -- in fact, even better, this series supports automatic dual pass 2-sided scan to PDF.  Nice.

True -- some of the details depend on what kind of app or software you are using.

For example, Windows Fax and Scan only scans to image format.

The Full Driver printer software includes HP Scan and supports scanning with various other scan apps or programs, too.

Having installed the full driver printer software, try HP Scan and Capture app - PDF and Image scan support.

The printer supports Webscan using EWS -- Webscan supports both PDF and Image files

The Full Driver printer software is available for Windows 11 and your printer.

Barring other issues, the driver should provide a means to print and scan.

Scanning is directly supported using HP Scan.

Printing is supported using a number of programs and applications.

For example, the full driver printer software supports printing in Word.

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant and HP Scan. If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

Thank you for your awesome response. I ended up grabbing a USB cable and making it scan to PDF format. It was a real hack job though in getting it to function. I used the HP smart app. I tried to scan from the printer itself but this failed. It said that that it lost its connection. To me, this has always been a weakness with HP printers. So I tried to get the full software drivers suite to download and install. I never succeeded in getting that to work. Again, HP let me down. I have the basic drivers installed from my original install but for some reason I just cannot get the full software set. Either the site crashes or the install crashes or it cannot find my HP account. lol. Heck the site could not find my serial number either! I will try again with some of your suggestions. Thank you.

You are welcome.

OK -- A counterpoint --

Caveats

  • Know that aside from the facts of the specifications stated by the manufacturer, everything I write is my opinion only.
  • On more than one occasion, I've had an inordinate amount of trouble installing the Easy Start software web packages.  Why?  No idea.  My network is strong, healthy, configured correctly, and stable.  My computers are new-ish, to my knowledge are all configured properly for stable network communication, at least one workstation is built with all exceptional hardware, all systems are running Windows 11.  I've installed printer software more often than most people outside of a support environment might experience.  Meh.  Nothing that follows in this message makes any excuses for difficulty installing the full driver printer software for this printer series.  Once finally installed, the full driver is stable, supports the printer features, and works as expected.

Start...

Printers, HP and others, are pretty standard devices -- Printers are an established technology.

Wireless is fairly standard -- I would guess that HP uses the same wireless radio tech as do other brands.   It would not make sense for HP to build or use puny, starved, weak little wireless radios for its top shelf products (for example, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9000 series).

True - Scan is a resource intensive process -- If there are weaknesses in your network, router, or device (computer, tablet, phone), scanning will have problems.

Resorting to a USB printer cable might speak to a weak, possibly outdated, perhaps not fully configured router.  Network load, router placement play a part.

If you are running a Mesh network, there are reasons why the connection might never work as hoped.  Printers do not always do well in a Mesh network.  There are articles on the 'net should you want to read about the subject.

The weakness might be sourced at the computer -- outdated or missing drivers (perhaps including the wireless driver), device placement (too far away from the router, too close, wrong channel), other Windows issues, system load, general system health.  The computer is a possible place to look -- don't read too much into the idea.  There is no "blame-game" here.

The printer supports Ethernet - that's generally more stable.  Try it.  It's not magic.

More about Wireless -- Considerations and possible solutions

If the printer is unable to help itself (it's just hardware), consider changing the connection type to TCP/IP, assign the printer its own IP address.

People tend to prescribe to the idea that all wireless is better at 5GHz --

In general,

  • 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
  • 5GHz is faster

Dual Band Network - Considerations

Reminders

Do not ignore your router --

A router that is weak, outdated, poorly located, or incorrectly configured can cause all sorts of odd network behavior issues.

If the printer supports it, connecting using Ethernet is generally a better choice.

Wireless

Some printers, particularly older models, only support Wireless at 2.4GHz

Some printers support Wireless at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz – but not at the same time

Regardless, if the printer won't work or cannot connect to your 5GHz SSID named network, connect to the 2.4GHz network.

If you are running a Dual Band Network,

Check that the router is set up to broadcast all frequencies it supports.

Next,

If your router supports it,

On your router:

Create a separate SSID named network for each frequency supported by the router

What?  Create one SSID named network for 5GHz and one SSID named network for 2.4GHz

and

Connect the printer to the SSID named network on the frequency / band you want it to use.

In general,

  • 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
  • 5GHz is faster

Example – EWS – IPv4

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

Ethernet

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wired (802.3) > IPv4 Configuration

Wireless

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration

As Available:

Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced

Network Interface on / off, Network SSID name, Security Settings, Passphrase / Password

Select and connect to the correct SSID / network name for the bandwidth you are using.

Note:   It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address.  Doing so can improve stability.
