So I've been using the following driver for a long time, and while my trusty 1300 Laserjet is doing fine for its age, this driver does not allow you to adjust the print density.

HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 and Higher (64-bit)

7.0.0.29 1.5 MB Apr 21, 2015

My questions is: Can I use an older driver that does allow print density adjustment, or as an alternative is there a way to set the print density by sending appropriate codes via command line?

I cannot answer this question.

But have you tried this HP Printer Administrator Resource Kit ?

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

There is a program in the package that may allow preconfiguring the print driver... Will try to check it out.
