I have a new MacBook Air with MACOS Sonoma 14.5.  I could not get my printer to operate with the new computer so I deleted the printer and wanted to download the Print Driver (do I need firmware too?) for my HP Desk Jet Pro 8600 Premium.  I have tried several times including after booting my computer in Safe Mode and it simply just keeps cranking but never completes the download.  My computer cannot find the printer so that is why I thought I needed the driver.

Hi @1Victoria ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer working with your new MacBook Air running macOS Sonoma 14.5, follow these steps:

Check Compatibility: Verify that the printer driver for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium is compatible with macOS Sonoma 14.5. HP's support website usually provides this information.

Download Drivers and Software:

  • Go to the HP Support website.
  • Search for your printer model (HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer series).
  • Select your operating system (macOS Sonoma 14.5) from the list.
  • Download the recommended drivers and software. If you encounter issues with the direct download, try the following:
    • Clear your browser cache or try a different browser.
    • Disable any active VPNs or security software that might be interfering with the download.
    • Ensure you have a stable internet connection.

Install the Driver:

  • Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver and any necessary software.

Add the Printer to Your Mac:

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click the + button to add a new printer.
  • Select your printer from the list. If it doesn’t appear, you may need to connect it directly via USB to initially set it up.

Firmware Update (if necessary): Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Firmware updates can sometimes resolve compatibility issues. You can check for firmware updates on the same HP Support page where you downloaded the drivers.
  • Follow the instructions to update the printer firmware.

HP Smart App:

  • Consider using the HP Smart app from the App Store, which can help with setup and provide additional features and troubleshooting steps.

Troubleshooting Steps

  • Safe Mode: If the download keeps failing, try downloading the driver in Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Manual Installation:
    • Sometimes manually installing the printer using the IP address can help. Find the printer’s IP address from its control panel.
    • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer > IP tab, then enter the IP address.

Refer to this document: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer series  User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
