HP Laserjet Pro MFP M28a
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Hi There,

I recently bought an HP Laserjet Pro MFP M28a which I was using on a windows based laptop. recently I shifted to a MacBook air. I have tried to instal the printer using the HP smart and even downloaded the driver pack from their website but I cannot seem to find the driver in the list.

Is the printer not compatible with Mac?

Thanks

Brendon

@CAPBertie, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

This printer is compatible with macOS 11. Let us try these steps:

Make sure the cable is directly connected between the Mac and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the Mac? If yes, disable the same for time being.

To check, select the Go menu on the top of the screen and go to the Applications folder.

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your Mac:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus.

Check for any software updates on Mac

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Now, install the Hp Smart app from the App Store and try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Kumar,

I followed the instruction, I switched off the firewall, ensured that it is connected on USB 2.0 and the printer is detected. OS is updated but still nothing with HP Smart or HP easy start still nothing happens.

Is it possible to download the driver and instal it? without the complications of HP Smart.

@CAPBertie

What happens when you try using the HP Easy Start app? This app will direct you to download the full-feature printer driver.

This printer is not AirPrint compatible and there are no other drivers available to install the printer on a mac.

If HP Easy Start did not help, kindly follow the steps mentioned in this document.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kumar,

unfortunately it does not find the printer and keeps on searching endlessly until such time as a message that the printer is not detected is received.

This is becoming frustrating as it should be Mac compatable.

@CAPBertie

Have you tried using an alternate USB cable?

Hi Kumar,

luckily the printer (same usb) works on a windows based pc so it must be something to do with Mac.
