I've been using this 7640 printer for 2 yrs, connect to my HP Notebook laptop via a wireless connection w/o problems. The other day I printed a doc. that had colors that were poor quality so I changed the tri-color print cartridge (which I've done before) and then tried to reprint the doc. I imediately received an error mesg. on my HP Notebook monitor 'print error' No code and/or other msg. I rebooted my pc, (no change) I rebooted my pc AND turned off and on my printer (no change) I rebooted my, off/on my printer AND turned off and then on my router (no change) I deceided to reload the 7640 software/drivers. Using the add/remove hardware fuction I removed the 7640's icon. Then using the HP Scan DR to install the 7640 via the wireless connection option everything seemed to be working until the final step (Installing Network Device) it ran for 3-4 min. and then rec'd msg 'Unsuccessful Network Innstallation' Tried this several times, same result. It cannot find the printer. I have a bkup Espon printer connected the same way and it still works. I've spent hrs trying everything I could think of to resolve this problem. Help ! !

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.
I have gone through your Post and would like to help
I appreciate all your efforts and expertise in troubleshooting this issue
I suggest you uninstall the printer from root level and download the full feature software
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions
Keep me posted how it goes

I did not include with my first msg that I had already removed all references to my 7640 printer (hardware and drivers) as part of my attempt to get things to work. I also had used the Full Feature Software as part of my 7640 installation. But I used your inst. to verify that all was cleaned out There were no HP printers to uninstall, and there was no HP Printer driver file to remove. The software loads (i can see it on my 'Apps & Features' HP 7640 series Basic Device Software. The 3 steps Prepare, Connect, Activate. Prepare runs fine. It sees my printer and it's IP addr, In the connect step I select wireless and it tries to install the network device for several min. before unsuccesful network installation msg. come up. I've run this same process with the printer turned off, and the connect step runs and knows it's off and asks to turn it on. I've done that, It fails. I've had it off and then entered the IP addr, fails, I've had it off and entered the device name. It fails. There's some little thing that's at the end of the connect faze that's not working/missing. The printer itself has all the wireless info loaded (I can see it on the printers display screens) The software obsiviously can see it also because as part of the instal the printers IP addr. is listed. When doing this total software install dosen't it remove all the pre-existing software, drivers ect. as part of the install ? What's your next idea to fix this agravating little problem that renders my HP printer useless. Thanks.

A little more info to add to my last post. The drivers listed when running 'printui.exx /s are for my Epson, Foxit PhantonPDFPrinter (?),, Microsoft enhanced Point and Print Compatibility driver ( one for X64 processor and one for X86 processor). The only HP files that are recorded are Fax-HP envy 7640 series and HP envy 7640 series. Neither HP file contains the word 'driver' Also looking in the programs file the only HP apps that have a date of 2018 are: Basic device software 229 MB 12/6/2018, HP Photo creations 2,64 MB 5/22/2018, HP Smart (from HP Inc.) 70.6 MB 10/8/2018, HP Update 4.04 MB 12/3/2018, and Prod. Inprovement Study for HP 7046 11.2 MB 12/3/2018. No HP printers are listed in the 'printers & scanners list' There is a a 'HP ePrint' listed (whatever that is) but that's it.
So it appears during the install process the 7640 software is being loaded, but the 7640 drivers aren't.

Thanks for keeping me posted
I suggest you try to connect the printer to the Network using the Wireless Setup Wizard
Please Reset the Network Setting back to default
- Touch the Wireless Icon > Go to Settings > Restore defaults ( The Menu settings might vary slightly depending on the Model )
Next run the wireless setup wizard to get the printer connected to the Network
1. From the printer control panel, touch (Wireless). 2. Touch ( Settings . 3. Touch Wireless Settings. 4. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard. 5. Follow the display instructions to complete the setup.
Then try using the HP Smart App and let me know if that works

I did as you suggested and reset the printer network to the default and then ran the HP Smart app. Ran UNSUCESSFULY just like all the other times. It keeps failing running the DeviceSetup.exe. I've got over $50 dollars invested in new print cartridges and more hours and days that I care to count for a printer that can't be used. This whole poblem started because I changed a print cartridge .. ridicluous !

Thanks for keeping me posted
I suggest you perform a Semi Full Reset and then setup the printer using HP Smart App again
Since these steps are specific to your printer, I have sent you a private message with the next course of action
Please check your private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile.

Are you sure this isn't a Windows related problem ? Using the HP Doctor I can click on network and see my network devices. It displays HP1ECB23 (thats the 7640) as active, wi-fi conection (all bars up) the network ssid is displayed, it's password is displayed. I can click on printer and click on align and it prints out a alignment page. Obviously my latop can access it, and HP Doctor can access it. It cannot find the printer during the 'network driver setup' step. That's where it's failing. Is there some piece of code that is missing ?

It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the information.
I recommend you assign a static IP to the printer and check whether the issue is resolved.
Here is how it is done.
Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
