I was tricked in to buying these LaserJet "Pro" 3001dw by the good reviews on the HP site. I will never buy and I will tell people to never buy these "HP Smart", "HP+" printers. I shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to try to set this up on the network.
Printer doesn't work until you activate it online. -WHY?
To do that you need to run a piece of software on your computer but it turns out the software won't run on server OS software. -Jesus...
So I have to use a regular computer. -Ok
I use a computer, it finds the IP of the printer I gave it, asks for a PIN number from the printer, -WHY!? Fine, found that.
Then it needs the pairing number to be printed out. -WHY?!?
I run back to where the printer is set up, get the print out, plug in the number to try to activate.
Takes a few minute and it fails. Fails to activate. -CRIES
I restart this whole process and now it just flat out fails before even trying to activate. -SMASHES PRINTER
Now it just wants me to call support. -I'M SURE THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE A WASTE OF TIME...

So i fought with this for a long time. Im an IT pro and found this processing so frustrating.
So what I did was run the HP Setup software but select to use the printer with a USB cable, i plugged the network cable in as well and eventual i Was able to access the menu on the printer console (its a Laserjet 4002) In the menu there's an option to check for firmware upgrade and I did that. (even though when running the HP setup it says there is no update available)
Then i removed the USB cable and rebooted the printer, and then ran the HP setup again, this time it printed my "pairing code" sheet and I could register it.
This process should not be this hard.
Last time i ever buy or recommend a HP printer to my customers, Xerox all the way.
I know the instructions above are a bit vague but when I was doing it I think it would work (nothing else did) so i wasnt exactly taking notes.
I pity home users/non IT people buying this rubbish and trying to set it up

Hello @JAGinsligo,
You can do it as you did, other ways exist, fortunately. For example :
For example :
You have to uninstall the old driver in the Windows Control Panel, in "Programs and Features", then right click on the printer line, "remove".
Delete all occurrences that you will find in: Program and Program X86, then, in the Control Panel, right click on your old printer (If it is still there, chances are it is no longer there) the "Remove" if it is present.
Restart the PC. Connect the printer to the power supply, turn it on, then connect a USB cord 1) on the PC side, 2) on the printer you
Connect to USB, during installation ONLY when prompted.( Towards the end of the installation).
Start installing your printer, by right-clicking on the Setup. driver exe installed, installed ''en
as administrator'', let the printer install itself, at the end, restart the PC.
To create a shortcut on the Windows desktop, (to have access to your printer), open the Windows Control Panel, right click on the icon of your
new printer, create a shortcut, yes, on the desktop.
A new shortcut has been created on the Windows desktop.
Open the Windows desktop, left-click on the new shortcut that has been created,
A printer menu appears (See below) with "ink levels", possibility : print, scan, fax, scan.
If it works, you can delete the old shortcut on the Windows desktop.
*Turn on your printer, print a test page, by clicking on "Customize your Printer",
''Print a test page''.
That's it, your printer is working again.
