HP DeskJet 2710e All-in-One Printer

Recently my Deskjet 2710e only prints part of a page when I start printing in the morning.  This happens whether I print from my MacBook (running macOS Big Sur 11.7.0) of from my iPhone (iOS 18.5).

If I reprint the partial page again, from the same device, the page print perfectly.

Yesterday, this happened again later in the day, after a few hours between print jobs.

My printing output is small, typically <100 pages/month.  Most days 1/2/3 pages, then occasionally larger documents.

Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Chris

@sheddy53, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're experiencing an intermittent issue where your HP DeskJet 2710e printer only prints a partial page when you first attempt to print, but the second attempt works fine. Here are a few suggestions that might help resolve the issue:

Check Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware or drivers might cause odd printing issues, especially if your printer has been idle for a while.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Check Connection Type

If you’re using a wireless connection, there may be an issue with the Wi-Fi signal or network stability when you first try printing.

Try printing with a USB cable for a test. If the issue doesn’t occur when connected by USB, the problem may be related to your network.

Ensure that your printer and devices are on the same Wi-Fi network (for wireless printing).

Print Queue and Jobs

Sometimes, the print queue can get stuck or corrupt, especially with small print jobs.

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (on your MacBook), select your printer, and click "Open Print Queue."

Clear any old or stalled print jobs and try printing again.

Restart your printer and your devices to reset everything.

Check Print Settings

Ensure that the print settings are correct, such as paper size and margins, as these might affect how the document is printed.

Sometimes the page size settings may not match, and it can cause odd printing behavior. Try changing the page size or scaling to see if it affects the print job.

Run HP Smart:

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi, and thanks for your detailed reply.

After exhibiting the described behaviour for a few days, the printer started printing properly with no missed content.  However, in the last couple of days, it's started doing the same again.  If the printer has been idle for a while, the first page after it comes back to life is incomplete. I should point out that I always press the Cancel button on the printer to wake it up from being asleep before I send it a new job.

Going through your points...

The printer firmware is up to date.

I haven't tried a USB cable.  The printer does have a square USB socket at the back, but this is covered with a  label which has two symbols, the standard WiFi symbol in HP pale blue, and below it the letters "USB" and the symbol of a USB plug both in black, inside a blue circle with a line through it - suggesting not to use USB.

The Print Queue is fine and has no old jobs listed.

The print settings haven't changed in ages.  Plus, second and subsequent pages, once the printer has woken up, all print fine.

My MacBook is too old for HP Smart, running macOS Bug Sur 11.7.

The issue occurs when I print from my iPhone which is up to date on iOS18 and has HP Smart installed.

Have you any further suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Hey @sheddy53,

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! It sounds like the issue is still persisting intermittently. Here are few more steps you can try:

Printer Sleep Mode:

If the printer has been idle, it might not wake up properly. Check the printer’s sleep/power-saving settings, or try to disable sleep mode entirely if possible.

Wi-Fi Connection:

The first print job might be having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. Try restarting your router and make sure the printer is properly connected to the network.

HP Smart App:

Run diagnostics in the HP Smart app on your iPhone to check for network or print quality issues.

Test Print:

Try printing a test page directly from the printer (not from your phone/computer) to see if the issue still happens when not using a device.

Reset the Printer:

If nothing works, you can try resetting the printer to factory settings and reconnecting it to your Wi-Fi.

You may refer to this guide: Restore factory defaults on your HP printer | HP® Support

Let me know how it goes.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Garp_senchau ,

Thanks for another detailed set of suggestions.

Since I posted ,my most recent reply, I tried one other approach.  I now switch off the printer every evening and back on again in the mornings.  Admittedly a small sample so far, but four days in a row the first print of the day has been fine. I'm wondering if there's some memory or cache that needs clearing, and that rebooting the printer achieves that.

Cheers,

Chris

Hey, Thanks for the update

It’s great to hear that turning the printer off at night has helped. Restarting the printer can clear its memory or any small errors, so that fresh start each morning might be preventing the problem.

Hi again,

I think it's fairly likely to be solved, but as it's been an intermittent issue I'll leave it a little while longer to make sure there's no recurrence.  All being well, I'll click on "Accepted Solution" during the coming week.

Thanks again for your help,

Chris
