A few years ago, I suggested to my customers to update printers and move to HP from Kyocera printers. This way they can have a personal printer in each office. My problem is every time there is a update to the computer OS the printer stops working and then you have to relogin to the app, when no one remembers the password. I've tried to get the Basic HP Scan to install but it keeps defaulting to HP Smart. This has become a real nightmare for me as the IT guy just trying to help out. My other customers using Brother or Cannon does not have this issue. Only 3 of my customers with HP printers. I'm about to pull the plug on HP for this reason. Can anyone tell me how to keep this from happening?
Thanks in Advance.

Welcome to the HP User Community.
Use of the HP Smart application in Windows is optional.
As to the password, do what everyone does and no one recommends: write it down.
Still not recommended, of course - the official advice: "Keep passwords private and safe."
Use of the HP Smart application is not mandatory.
You can either keep HP Smart on the system(s) or uninstall the app in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features
What to do?
If you have not done so, install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.
The full driver software works with programs and various software to support printing and scanning (using HP Scan). The full driver provides full access to Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.
Note: If you do decide to keep the HP Smart app, the application can benefit from also having the full driver installed. Having the full driver installed won't help people with remembering passwords - the app operation might be a bit smoother.
Printer Software - How-to Video:
HP OfficeJet 9010 | 9015 | 9018 | 9019 : Download & Install HP Full featured software
References / Resources
Method - Use the Easy Start Software to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software
For printers that support the option,
Use the Easy Start Software wrapper to find, install, and configure the printer software.
- Home Page - HP Easy Start
- Open Category Software and Drivers
- Open Topic: Software-Utility
- Download-and-Save the current version of the Easy Start Software to install your print software
- If using USB: Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
- Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
- Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software” / "Basic" software
- If using USB: Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
- After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.
Optional Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey
- Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
- About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the Smart application). If necessary, select the "Basic" Software.
- Skip / Ignore suggestion(s) that you add anything you do not want / need at the moment. For example, you do not (at the time of installation) need an HP Account and you do not need or want to sign up for Instant Ink just because you are loading the printer software.
- Full driver provides access to the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.
