I’ve been recommending HP printers for 15 years. Now, I’m seriously considering changing this recommendation. I have two clients whose printers, hp 3830 and hp 4650 will NOT print double-sided. I have researched the issue extensively, have uninstalled and re-installed, have gone into Device settings and allowed the update with the duplex then showing up (but STILL won’t print double-sided. I have tried installing the printers as wired and then re-added them wirelessly. THIS DID NOT WORK! From what I’ve read, this is due to an HP firmware update. You need to provide a fix, HP, or lose some future customers!

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
- HP Officejet 3830 All-in-One series do not support Auto-Duplex printing.
- Click here to check the specifications of HP Officejet 3830 All-in-One series
- However, you can do manual duplex printing by feeding the printed paper back to the tray so that it can print on the other side.
To print on both sides of the page Manually on HP Officejet 3830 All-in-One series (Windows)
1. From your software, select Print.
2. Make sure your printer is selected.
3. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box. Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer Properties, Printer, or Preferences.
4. Select the appropriate options.
● On the Layout tab, select Portrait or Landscape orientation.
● On the Paper/Quality tab, select the appropriate paper type from the Media drop-down list in the Tray Selection area, select the appropriate print quality in the Quality Settings area, and then select the appropriate color in the Color area.
● Click Advanced to select the appropriate paper size from the Paper Size drop-down list.
5. On the Layout tab, select an appropriate option from the Print on Both Sides Manually drop-down list.
6. After you print the first side, follow the on-screen instructions to reload the paper with the blank side up and top of the page down, and then click Continue.
7. Click OK to print.
To print on both sides of the page (OS X)
1. From the File menu in your software, choose Print.
2. In the Print dialog, choose Paper Handling from the pop-up menu and set Page Order to Normal.
3. Set Pages to Print to Odd only.
4. Click Print.
5. After all of the odd-numbered pages have printed, remove the document from the output tray.
6. Reload the document so that the end that came out of the printer is now going into the printer and the blank side of the document is facing toward the front of the printer.
7. In the Print dialog, return to the Paper Handling pop-up menu and set the page order to Normal and the pages to print to Even Only.
8. Click Print.
To print on both sides of the page on HP Officejet 4650 All-in-One series
You can print on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically by using the automatic two-sided printing mechanism (duplexer).
1. From your software, select Print.

My client was told when purchasing the HP 3830 that it printed double-sided. Of course they didn’t mention that this was a manual operation. Clearly misrepresented the product!
As far as the HP 4650, I know how to print double-sided. If you read my post carefully, you would see I am saying that the function will not work despite numerous strategies that I have read in your forum. This was not always the case with this printer. It happened after I installed it on a brand new windows 10 computer. That’s why am wondering if this was a firmware update that happened when I downloaded the software again for the new computer.

- Which application are you trying to print from?
- Have you tried printing different documents like PDF, Word or Emails and check for 2-sided option?
Let us first check if the 'Automatic discovery' feature on Windows is detecting the duplexer.
- Go to Printer properties
- Select the Device settings tab.
- Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.
If the above step does not help, Let us try to use a Class driver and check for the double-sided print option on HP Officejet 4650
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
- In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer.
- Right click on the printer > printer properties > Advanced tab > New Driver > Next
- If Windows update is available, click it for more driver options
- Under manufacturer select HP. Under printers search/select HP Officejet 8600 Class Driver
- Try to print
Keep me posted.

It won’t print double-sided from any application.
I did make sure that the duplex unit was listed as “installed“. This did not fix it.
I will try your last suggestion but do you want to make sure that you did intend to have me look for the driver for 8600 rather than 4650, or was this just a copy and paste mistake you made?

It wasn't a copy and paste/mistake. I do want you to try and use HP Officejet 8600 Class Driver rather than HP Officejet 4650 as there could be a driver conflict.
Keep me posted.

- As mentioned in the previous post, if you see a windows update button available(which is in the picture attached), click on it so that the driver list is updated with more options.
- If you are not able to find the HP Officejet 8600 Class Driver even after windows update on your computer, create a new User account and try the duplex options by using the original HP Officejet 4650 Drivers.
Keep me posted.

I did click windows update button and the driver did not display. Did you bother trying it so you would see this for yourself?
I figured out the solution myself. The old software, used for Windows 7, works! Hopefully, other people who have this issue will find this post. The printer now prints double sided and gives an option of printing in black only.
Anyone who has windows 10 who is having this issue should just choose Windows 7 when they download the software for HP 4650.
Your company should really fix this issue!
