I recently upgraded from a Brother laser printer for two reasons. The Brother printer just would not print labels aligned and I wanted duplex. I checked and the one I went for (HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M283fdw) looked like the right fit, duplex, variety of scanning functions etc.
It prints labels absolutely spot on each time and the scanning functions work very well, however, every time I want to print something duplex, it comes up with error service code 49 and restarts the printer. Reading up, this code means a job has been sent to the printer that the printer cannot handle. I checked before buying and this printer is capable of duplex printing.
I have gone into the web based settings and checked duplex and default to flip on long edge. I've gone into Print Properties in windows and checked the same, but it will not print anything in duplex! I have tried various different documents, PDF, DOCX, XLSX etc. but still no joy. I am so frustrated!
I have read some posts that suggest downloading HP software and installing full drivers, which I have done, but still no joy!
Is anybody able to suggest anything that might help, I'm at my wits end.
Thank you!

49 errors are frustrating because they only tell you there is a problem, without being helpful in telling you exactly where to look. First question, is the firmware up to date? If not, that is your first step, go to support.hp.com and compare the version installed to what is posted. There are times when the automatic update does not apply the most current firmware. Other things to check are paper size and type settings. The printers are smart enough that they will not try to print on unsupported media. Often printers ship with paper settings of any size and any type which will prevent duplexing.
There are a few models that do not have a 2 sided scanner for copying. That fact is sadly buried and not always immediately apparent. Here is the link, if you look at the ADF section.
