After installing a new printhead and cartridges in my Officejet Pro 8600, error message says "the printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed". SIn the past, I replaced the printhead without any problems. This time, after repeats of the same error message, I de-installed the new printhead and new cartridges, turned off power, and disconnected the power plug to the wall outlet followed by the reverse sequence. I did that four times. I still get the same error message. I carefully inspected the board contacts in the printer and on the new printhead. They are completely clean and new looking. They look perfect. Is there procedure I can run to find out if the new printhead is bad? The new printhead and four new ink cartridges are HP branded and shipped from Chatsworth CA in an HP box, but purchased through Amazon.

Hi @JWH23,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message you're encountering with your Officejet Pro 8600 indicates that the printer is not recognizing the new printhead. This can be due to several reasons, including issues with the printhead itself, the installation process, or even the printer's firmware. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.
Ensure Proper Installation
- Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
- Remove the printhead and cartridges.
- Reinstall the printhead carefully, making sure it clicks into place.
- Reinstall the cartridges.
Reset the Printer
- With the printer off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the printer and the wall outlet.
- Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.
Clean the Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove the printhead and cartridges again.
- Using a lint-free cloth and a bit of distilled water, gently clean the gold contacts on the printhead and inside the printer.
- Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the printhead and cartridges.
Check for Firmware Updates
Sometimes, a firmware update is required for the printer to properly recognize new components.
- Connect your printer to your computer or network.
- Visit the HP support website and look for firmware updates for your Officejet Pro 8600.
- Download and install any available updates.
Test the Printhead
To determine if the printhead is defective, you can:
- Try installing it in another compatible printer if available.
- If the printhead was purchased from Amazon, consider contacting the seller for a replacement or return if it's under warranty.
HP Diagnostic Tools
- HP offers diagnostic tools that can help identify issues with the printer. Visit the HP Support page and download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool.
By following these steps, you should be able to determine whether the issue lies with the printhead, the installation process, or another component of the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
