Make sure ncat.exe and the firmware file  ojpro_8710_1834A_08212018.rfu are both in the same folder

How can I perform this procedure from a Mac? I don't have a Windows computer to use. Also, don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm trying to downgrade the firmware on an OfficeJet Pro 8625.

I have no clue. You would have to find the Mac version a of the tools I use (if they exist) or maybe install Windows on a virtual machine. Good luck

SUCCESS!!!!

After my 8710 went through an automatic "upgrade" (this feature is now turned off) my non-HP cartridges would no longer work.  I  have a large supply of 3rd party cartridges on hand and have been very pleased with the quality.  After reading a lot of posts, I concluded that the reversal of the firmware was impossible, so I started to trash the printer and cartridges and buy a Non-HP brand.  But since I have used HP printers for the last 20 years, I searched some more.  I found this post and gave it a try.  I took a few hours to get every thing right - making sure all files were in the correct directory (file not found error), missing the "rfu" ext on the file name, and including the port (9100 in my case worked). I used the Cmd line version of Ncap. I kept getting timeout msgs, then changed time parameter to 10. Then I kept getting the message "transfer rejected by the host", corrected this by adding the 9100 port parameter.   I changed some cartridges to get rid of the no-hp message, but then got cartridge depleted msg since the only HP cartridges I had were empty ones.   Then the ftp didn 't give an error, just seemed to hang.   Finally out of frustration I hit the power button to turn the thing off and give up.  A green display screen suddenly popped up on the printer with 5 steps and a load file progress slide.  Took a few minutes, then the printer rebooted.  I put my new 3rd party cartridges back in and they worked.  A look at the printer info showed firmware version of 1834A (old) not the new 1928 version.  Printer is back in business.  Thanks DamonNorris .  Hope this helps someone.  Bottom line -  FIRMWARE REVERSAL IS POSSIBLE.

Thx for the useful information including the firmware file. Was able to follow the steps as you outlined and my 8710 now accepts my refilled cartridges.

Hi all, I couldn't find the firmware needed in the FTP link provided on page 1, however I found old firmware for my device on this ink website, and it's a simple one click install to downgrade the firmware. Worked on my HP Officejet Pro 6968.

After downgrading, make sure you disable auto-update checks!
