If you're seeing the "Firmware update not applicable" message for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, please try downloading the latest firmware directly from our official support page here:
Make sure the printer is connected via USB and not over the network during the update, and that it’s not in sleep mode. Let us know how it goes or if you need help with the steps.

Just a remark that the "Firmware not applicable" for firmware updates is a huge issue for the OfficeJet 8600 printers and HP didn't provided any solution so far. I had collected a huge amount of links to existing threads and what i did (e.g. the previous suggestion to download the firmware from the HP didn't helped) here without a solution so far:

Btw. i think this one can't be solved by a user or any HP support, this needs to be fixed by HP to provide either a working firmware or by removing the wrong firmware from the download page if it is not applicable to the printer.
