I have no problem printing and scanning even works with Windows Fax and Scan.  However the HP Scan and Capture tool fails with "General Failure" when I use it.  It has better features than the Windows app and it used to work...no longer.

Hi! @SEG4, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have issues scanning from your printer.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Please try the steps recommended below.

Reinstall HP Scan and Capture App on  your PC:

Remove Hp Scan and Capture from Apps and Features > reboot > open Windows Store > search for Scan and Capture > install

Create a multiple page PDF file:
From single document pages, scan to computer
From single page PDF documents already on the computer

If the issue still persists, uninstall the printer software from the root level and install the latest full feature printer software on your PC.

1. Navigate to Start >Type Devices and Printers in the Search > Select it from the results

2. Highlight your printer object and Right Click

3. Choose Remove Device

4. Highlight something else from the list

5. Click the Print Server Properties button from the toolbar

6. Select the Drivers Tab

7. Highlight the appropriate print driver

8. Click Remove

9. Check the Remove Driver and Driver Package option when prompted

10. Click OK

Update the printer software using this link.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a beautiful day ahead! 🙂

HP M177fw does not respond to HP Scan and Capture. The error message is General Failure. I have uninstalled and re-installed Windows Scan and Capture with no avail. More recently, I have seen a suggestion to deinstal and reinstal the printer which I will do. I expect I will be successful within approximately 30 minutes, which is the average time it takes me to scan a document, because I need to relearn and reperform these steps every time I want to scan a document.

I am using a MS Surface which is approximately 1 year old, and obviously, I have up to date Windows at all times. Does HP have reliable software that works with Windows computers so that you do not need to reconfigure your computer/printer every time you use it?
