This has been escalated (12/16/2024) to the HP division doing the firmware.

I just updated mine 178nw and experienced the same problem. Keeps rebooting. Waiting for the solution!

Same for me, after firmware upgrade i'm stuck in an eternal loop.

There is not enough time to upgrade the firmware with usblist2

How is it possible that a firmware that is probably flawed is still downloadable?

You have to go into "wait image" mode by turning the printer off (unplug it from the wall for few seconds), then press the cancel button and power-on button at the same time and hold them until the ''wait image" message appears. Then you'll have few seconds to start updating (or rather downgrading) to V16 of the firmware. Few people have successfully downgraded to V16 and printer works as before. I am going to try it this evening. Unfortunately, it's impossible to share the firmware here, as all the links get removed automatically or by moderators.

Hi Ilja_P,

I can confirm the "wait image" mode, upgrading with the current firmware it's futile as you can suppose...
I will look for an older firmware version, on the HP FTP the old version is removed when a new update is available so it's impossible to download from there.

PS: if your device do not recognize the Printer in the wait image mode, reboot the printer and re-enter in that mode
