HP ENVY 5640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I presume it is a common issue in these days but after the recent update to Windows 10 Creators my ENVY 5640 is not working anymore. The printer was perfectly working so far with Windows 10 on my DELL Inspiron 13-5368 and even re-installation of the printer is failing now.

In the rare occassions when I am able to make the printer apper in the device list the status the status is always "Driver is unavailable".

Both HP and Windows drivers apparently are not working after the update.

Really disappointed by the results of this unwanted update...

Thank you for your help,

Davide

Hello, @event_horizon – Hope you are well 🙂

Allow me to welcome to HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!

I see that you are having issues with the Envy printer on your Windows 10 machine. You need to install the updated drivers for the printer to get this working. Follow the below-mentioned steps:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/en5640/EN5640__Full_WebPack_1107.exe to install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

Hi @Dvortex,

Thank you for your feedback. I will try your procedure and let you know the results.

Hi @Dvortex,

Unfortunately the procedure is not working and the driver installation fails during the installation of the network device (the printer appears in the list with the correct MAC and IP), AV is disabled during the installation to avoid any possible lititation to network access.

Unfortunately this operation was smooth before the Windows 10 Creators update...as matter of fact the orinter is working (and installing) perfectly with another PC running plain Windows 10 at home.

Other ideas?

Thank you for your help,

Davide

Hi @event_horizon, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @Dvortex, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps.

Request you to uninstall the printer software again from your computer by following the procedure mentioned below.

Once the printer software/settings and settings are removed, restart your computer and install the printer using USB connection.

Observe the printer to make sure it is responding fine with USB connection. If it working fine with USB, please refer to this HP Article to convert the USB setup to wireless.

Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)

Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)

Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.

Click on print server properties.

You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.

Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.

Restart the PC.

Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,

Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.

It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files, ignore them).

If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.

Restart the PC again.

Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

Let me know if this helped.

Dear @Chimney_83,

Thank you for your help. I have followed your procedure but unfortunately neither the USB and Wireless connections are working. With reference to the screenshot attached I am always getting error with one method or another during the installation.

It seems there is something preventing the printer to communicate with the driver (regardless the fact it is via USB or Wireless).

The printer is working fine with other devices (and it was working properly until a few weeks ago):

- Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 tablet

- Apple iPhone

- Dell Vostro 1500 laptop with Windows 10 64bit

I will continue my tests and let you know in case of updates.

Thank you for your support,

Hi event_horizon,

Did you manage to get this sorted?  I came across this problem today and found the solution to be:

- Goto Device Manager in Windows;

- Find the printer and click on "Update Driver"

- All it to search all locations (top option?)

You should then get a message informing you the driver has been updated.  The printer should now show up when you select print from a program.

Not sure what MS update killed it, but the system I saw this on had a bunch of Windows 10 updates a few days ago.

No need to uninstall any of the HP programs as stated earlier in this thread.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

S.

Hi Soreilly,

No, unfortunately I wasn't able to solve the issue. The printer doesn't even appear in the device list. Now I have lost it in my second laptop too after one of the recent updates. This is really annoying.

I will keep investigating but now I can only use the printer via phone/tablet or standalone as a scanner.

Thank you for your help,

I have just spent 2 hours trying to reinstall this printer after performing a reset of Windows 10. It consistently says "Driver not available".

The printer is available on the network and is printing ok from iOS devices. The installation can appear to complete successfully but then it seems not to able to find a functioning driver.

I have tried downloading the complete software and just the basic driver to no avail.

I would be grateful of any assistance.

Hi @event_horizon,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you are unable to connect your HP e-All-in-One Printer to your computer.

This issue could occur if the drivers are not installed properly.

Let's go through a few steps to uninstall and reinstall the drivers:

Step 1: Uninstall the Drivers:

Please follow the steps provided to uninstall the printer software in the link: Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

Also, please follow the steps provided below to completely remove the printer software from printer properties.

Steps to remove printer driver files from Print Server Properties:

1. Open the Print Server Properties dialog window by doing any one of the following:

(a). Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in 'printui /s /t2' (without the quotes), and then press Enter or click OK.

(b) From the Start menu or the Start screen and open Devices and Printers. Select any printer and then click "Print server properties" at the top of the window. Click on the Drivers tab.

2. Select the printer driver you wish to uninstall.

3. Click the Remove button.

3. Select "Remove driver and driver package" and click OK.

Step 2: Download and install the Drivers from the link: Full Feature Software and Drivers

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.
