HP EasyScan for Mac OS cannot find installed scanner on HP OfficeJet 8730 MFP even though standard Mac OS utilities have no problem. I can print OK, then five minutes later try to scan a document using EasyScan and it tells me the device is offline.

Hi @b4davis,

A warm welcome to HP Community!

Performing a power cycle and then selecting the correct scanner on HP Easy Scan may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

Please ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with it's software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer firmware and Mac software:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

1.) Turn off your Mac, Printer and Router.

2.) Unplug the power from the back of router, wait for 10 -15 seconds.

3.) Connect the power cable back to router, turn on the router first. Wait till the router to initialize.

4.) Turn on Printer and Mac.

5.) Open HP Easy Scan.

6.) Click "Scanner:" and select Browse Scanners...

7.) Select the listed HP Officejet 8730..

8.) Try to Scan.

Let me know how it goes!

I can make that work, but I'm not going thru all of those steps everytime I need to scan a doc.

Once you power cycle the printer and add the scanner using the steps I suggested in the previous post, HP Easy Scan should automatically detect the scanner the next time you try to scan.

It does not. I continue to experience the same issue.

Could you check if Image Capture is able to detect the scanner:

1.) On your Mac, open Finder

2.) Click Applications and open Image Capture

3.) Select your printer name under Devices.

Instructions on how to scan using Image Capture can be found here

Why won't/can't HP fix the problem with EasyScan?

Does Image Capture detect the scanner? If so, could you create a new user account on Mac and let me know if HP Easy Scan is able to detect the Scanner.
