Hi!
I have installed, uninstalled and re-installed the full software package for printer 5540 for Windows 10.
Everything I have tried have failed; the printer dirver will not install. I can print from the eprint website - a testpage - but nothing from any app on the laption. Whichever way I try - the printer driver will not install.
I've tried installing other hp printer drivers to see if that can solve anything, as that solved it for someone else in a thread in Windows forum. No success.
I've tried installing basic printer driver from windows as suggested in the support pages in here - no luck either.
The only thing I haven't tried is to physically connect the printer via the USB cable (which I've lost).
The printer is on the same network as the laptop. It's online.
What do I have to do to get the printer driver installed?
Going mad here - so hope someone can help me 🙂
Thanks in advance

Hi @JytteP,
Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with installing the printer on Windows 10. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this happen after a recent Software or Windows update?
For now please try these steps:
- Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
- Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right-click on the Windows button to access device manager)
- Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
- Click on print server properties.
- You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
- Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
- Restart the PC.
- Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
- Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
- It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
- If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
- Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
- Restart the PC again.
Later create a new user account as an administrator from this link: http://hp.care/2rZfJBC
- Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2rIgkZ5 and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.
- Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.
- This should do the trick for you.
- If the problem continues, then please perform a try the printer on a different windows 10 computer and check if it installs and works correctly with it. Try it only if that is possible.
- This is to isolate the issue between your computer and the printer itself.
If the issue continues, you could perform a push button reset of Windows from this link: http://hp.care/2toQrBj and reinstall the printer software and drivers from the same link mentioned above.
This should do the trick for you.
- If nothing works, please try the HP generic drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2ybSH0r
Also, you could look up these links for scanning.
- Link 1: HP scan and capture for scanning: http://hp.care/2fAFYxE gives information to download, install and use the app with FAQs
- Link 2: HP Smart app: http://hp.care/2hmgdBr gives information to download, install and use the app with FAQs
- This will do the trick for you.
- Link 3: http://hp.care/2g383hH gives you steps on how to scan using different options.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Hej!
I can see I'll need to wait until the weekend to try all this - so I'll get back once I've been through the lot. I got hold of a USB cable today, to see if that could force Windows to install the driver. No such luck 🙂
Thanks for the praise - I'll try this !
Best wishes

Hi @JytteP,
I read the post completely. I thank you for your super quick response. I was away on my weekend (not a Saturday and Sunday) and could not respond immediately. You've displayed profound technical competence, immaculate patience coupled with a never say die spirit to try and get the issue resolved. Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂
Please try these steps and give me some good news that is music to your ears and mine. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Hi again
I already had another laptop with Windows 10 where the printer worked fine.
Well, after performing every suggested step, it was solved - but not until I did a complete re-set of Windows.... Kind of makes me wish I'd started with that 🙂
Every other step didn't solve my problem - but the reset of Windows solved the problem, and installing the full package worked smooooth as a dog 🙂
Thank you very, very and very much for your help! Yiiihaah, I can print
best

Hi!
Oh,...I was too happy too soon
I left the printer working, a few days later trying to print from web this is what I get:
Chosen printer is not accessible or not installed correctly.
Trying from Excel I get this:
The file can't be printed because of an erorr in printer (network).
And some silly messages that I reckon don't make sense in this case
If I choose printers and scanners in settings, choose the printer saying "not connected" and choose administrate
and from there try to print a test page, this is what I get:
This is what looking at the printer in device manager says:
Hardware unit is not connected a the moment (code 45)
(it is online and has excellent connection to wireless acc. to printer )
This is the information about the driver :
This is information about the events:
I am completely lost now - I have no clue what to try next.....
Can you help a poor woman at the virge of a nervous printer breakdown
Best wishes
