Hi, I have an HP Envy Photo 7134 all-in-one printer. Just today when I switch the printer on, the screen shows the printer trying to download a printer update. It goes from 0% to 100% download and then says download failed with the only option to press OK. Then it goes round in a circle again giving me no way of getting out of the circle. Can someone please help

Hello, having thought that the problem had gone away when  I reset the network configuration on my printer, it came back again the other day when I had a power outage. As a reminder, the problem description is as follows:

The problem is that if the power is lost or the printer is reset , when it boots up, the screen shows it trying to download an update. The download goes up to 100 percent and then states that it could not download the update. Pressing OK makes the same process repeat itself. I am then stuck until the printer goes to sleep which can sometimes be overnight at which time I press the  power button at front and am taken to the home screen. The printer is then OK to use until the next power outage.
This has only happened since i took out Instant Ink. If i try to change updates to manual, it does not allow me to do so.

I have been working through this with the HP Technical Team on call reference to no avail. 

I would be very grateful if there is someone else on this community wo is experiencing the same issue

You can manually download-save-install the Full Feature Software and / or the Firmware for your printer.

 

Installation - Printer Software

 

HP Documents

HP Printers - Finding Drivers, Apps, and Updates for HP Printers

HP Printers - Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

 

NOTES

  • If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.
  • Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).
  • Some (newer) printer models provide the "Easy Start" install method. When applicable, Easy Start will be found in the Software and Drivers website support page > Category Software 

 

Standard - Manual Installation of the Printer Software

 

Download-Save-Install the Full Feature Software or HP Easy Start Printer Setup for your Operating System version.

If you use the EasyStart method, select the Full Feature Software (full driver) when the option is presented.

 

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

NOTE:  Videos may be found in one or more locations (depending on printer / software / version)

Open the printer Software and Drivers page >

Scroll down and select Related Videos > Click View All >

Find and view the relevant video

AND / OR

** Printer Homepage – “Things that are your printer” **

Drivers / Software / Firmware Updates, Videos, Bulletins/Notices, How-to, Troubleshooting, User Guides, Product Information, more

Open the printer Website Support Homepage >

Scroll down and select Video Tutorials > Click View All >

Find and view the relevant video

 

** Optional - For Windows 10 Users – Compatibility Mode **

If you have been having trouble getting the printer software to fully install (Printer Assistant is functional and Scanning works), consider using Compatibility.  Note that this method only fixes “one type” of difficulty; installing this way may – or may not – make the necessary difference.

 

Right-Click on the downloaded installation file > Properties > Compatibility 

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

Select Windows 7

Click Apply and OK to close the Properties menu

Right-Click on the installation file and select to Run as Administrator

 

 

Firmware

Consider installing the printer Firmware

READ (when provided) all information and instructions before installing the firmware

If / After the firmware is installed, Restart the computer and log in

 

Reminder:  Firmware is normally updated after the printer software is installed / functional.

Thank you Dragon-Fur. Unfortunately, I cannot have been clear about my issue. On the printer control panel, the printer is attempti ng to download an update. I did not request this, it seems to be doing it automatically. The download goes from 0% to 100% and then the display changes to say "download unsuccessful" Update cannot be downloaded. There is an OK button on the display. I press that and the download attempt repeats. There is no way that I can see that I can break out of this cycle.

I did not instigate the printer update attempt. Switching the printer off and on does not get me out of the cycle

Recently I was reminded by a colleague that I now have a printer that, in least in some areas, is more different than it is the same as other printers.  It also seems smarter by measure, and less apt to minor oddities.  It also does not behave in the same way as my previous printers nor does it appear to give me the same flexibility to control some of its behavior.  I am still learning about this distinctive device - its vagaries, cleverness, and built-in intelligence.  So far the oddest thing I have discovered is that Tray 1 is the tray on the bottom and Tray 2 is on the top.  Seems odd to me, at least.  Smiling. 

 

So, having discovered that my new printer is both new AND possibly quite different than (some) other printers - I would guess that one of the following might be helpful to you, though I have little way of checking:

 

  • The printer might be trying to install FirmwareAt this writing, the date of the Firmware Update is 11-July-2019.  Manually downloading-saving-installing the firmware might circumvent the message on the printer in that if you can install the update using another means, the printer may stop trying to install the data itself.

  • My previously described printer is the HP Officejet Pro 9025.  Right this minute (and in this early hour) I cannot recall whether the 8740 was the same - the 9025 does not appear to give a choice (in the Embedded Web Server - EWS) whether the Firmware / Software is updated (the option is set to Install and is grayed out).  If your printer (still) allows you to control the Updates, you might find the setting / control in your EWS (assuming the printer is on the network).

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Tools > Printer Updates

If you can do so, try switching the Printer Update Options to "Alert" as opposed to "Install" > Apply

And / Or

If available, you could also try invoking "Check for Updates" > Check Now

Deliberately checking for updates might kick the process into working rather than spinning uselessly about.

 

 

  • If you have not done so, try using the Print and Scan Doctor to see if it can find / correct whatever is going on (stuck Firmware update, for example).  The Doctor does not impact the printer itself; the software might (similar to checking with the EWS) be able to check-for and install the Update from where it runs on your computer.

Open your printer's Home page or the Troubleshooting category to find the Doctor.

 

 

 

  • I understand that your printer is not suffering from a Power issue.  Nonetheless, the following document does include how to Restart the printer. (I think I have seen this same procedure described as a printer Reset, though that description can be misinterpreted and may explain the change in wording.)   See Step 2:  Printer Turns Off Unexpectedly or Repeatedly\

Side Bar:  Interestingly (at least for those of us who read this sort of thing), this document also provides the "Install the Firmware" advice  and How-to (Step 3).

Hi,

Sadly, I have not been able to resolve the issue. I have tried connecting to the IP address of the printer via my browser (Microsoft Edge) but it will not connect. Then I followed your recommendation and downloaded the Print and Scan Doctor but that failed to connect over wi-fi. I then dug out a USB cable and connected the printer directly to my computer. No luck! It still failed to connect. Don't know if the printer supports USB connection?

Not sure where to go next...….

So the easy stuff is done: Doctor and EWS check

 

What is going on depends on what the printer can do, what the printer thinks it is doing, what your network can do  - and "is doing" - with Wireless connections.

 

You may have to dig at this a bit to find out why the printer is not connecting to your Wireless network.  If the Doctor cannot find the issue and correct it, you will have to use other methods to find and fix the problem(s).

If the printer is not connecting to WiFi, know that the printer supports both bandwidths (2.4GHz and 5GHz).

Check your router to see which bandwidths are broadcasting.

If you are connecting to 5GHz, for example, make sure the router is enabled to broadcast on this bandwidth.

The same is true for the 2.4GHz band - check to see what the router is doing.

 

In general, it is best is the SSID (name of your network) is different for each of the bandwidths.

For example:

5GHz wireless SSID = MyFancy5

2.4GHz wireless SSID = MyFancy24

Some routers provide logs to help you check what the router is seeing / doing.

Hi Dragon-Fur,

I am pleased to say the issue now appears to be resolved. I will explain as much as I can in the hope that it helps diagnose similar issues in the future.

Firstly, recycling the power did not seem to help. The printer just recycled the attempt to download the update and ended in the error message that I have already described. However, just this time, I left the error message as it was and went out for a few hours. When I came back the screen had gone to sleep. I tried pressing the on/off button on the front and was delighted to see the printer went to the home screen.

 

Secondly, I got in there and pressed the settings icon and decided to reset my network settings to default as it had seemed there was a connectivity issue when I tried to connect to the printer. I then re-registered with my router.

 

Third, I navigated to Printer Maintenance which was set to automatically download and install updates when they were available. I tried to change this to manual, but was told this setting was locked and to check the HP Instant Ink website as it was necessary to have this set to auto.

 

Fourth, I went to another option which was to manually check for updates. This told me that my printer already had the latest updates installed!!

 

So in conclusion, I can only assume resetting my network connection caused things to work as they should.

 

I am now going to close this issue and thank you so much for your patience and help in resolving the issue.

Problem resolved by downloading latest firmware module and applying directly from my Windows 10 laptop.
