I've recently gotten a new computer on which I've finally moved to Windows 11. Downloaded HP software for my computer and no longer have the OfficeJet 7740 Printer Asst. Instead I have HP Smart app. I use this printer to print large pages (A3) in MS Publisher. When I do, the fonts and shapes are not rendered properly. All horizontal lines in box shapes are zigzags and all fonts are hopelessly fuzzy / zigzaggy and misaligned. Same fonts print fine in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Tried LibreOffice Draw and had same problem. I tried printing an image and it has the same "zigzaggy" problem in the horizontal dimension. What's up???

Hi @e1nric

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It appears you are encountering print quality issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 when using the HP Smart app on Windows 11. Below is a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help resolve these issues.

Step 1: Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges

Ensure you are using genuine HP ink or toner supplies, as non-HP or refilled cartridges may cause print quality problems.

Step 2: Verify Appropriate Paper

Use the correct paper type for your print job:

  • Load paper print side down.
  • Use clean, wrinkle-free paper.

Step 3: Check Print Settings

Adjust print settings in Windows for your print job:

  1. Windows:
    • In your software application, click File, then Print.
    • Open the Properties dialog box.
    • Modify settings such as Paper Type, Print Quality, Paper Size, and Black and White.

Step 4: Check Ink Levels

Check estimated ink levels from your printer's control panel. Replace any low or empty ink cartridges if necessary.

Step 5: Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page

  1. Load plain white paper.
  2. Swipe down the dashboard on the printer control panel, touch the Setup icon, select Reports, and touch Print Quality Report.

Step 6: Examine Test Patterns

Evaluate Test Pattern 1 and the color blocks for defects.

  • Align the printhead if lines are not straight in Test Pattern 1.
  • Clean the printhead if blocks show white lines or are faded or missing using the automated tool:
    • Swipe down the dashboard, touch Setup, Printer Maintenance, then Clean Printhead.

Step 7: Additional Steps

If issues persist, consider ordering a replacement printhead or servicing the printer.

Additional Recommendations:

  • Ensure your HP Smart app is updated to the latest version.
  • Try printing using Microsoft Publisher on different print settings to identify any specific issues with the app and printer interaction.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the print quality issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
