Hello HP Support Team,

I am requesting technical assistance regarding my HP OfficeJet Pro 8610, which is refusing compatible ink cartridges.

Printer details:

  • Model: HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 (A7F64)

  • Current firmware: FDP1CN2022AR

  • Operating system: Windows 11

  • Cartridges: HP 950XL / 951XL compatible cartridges

Troubleshooting already performed:

I have purchased and tested two complete sets of compatible ink cartridges from two different manufacturers. Both sets are rejected with the message:

"One or more cartridges appear to be damaged."

I have already performed the usual troubleshooting procedures, including cleaning cartridge contacts, reinstalling cartridges and performing power resets.

My older compatible cartridges are recognised by the printer, although they are empty.

Cartridge protection is disabled in the printer settings.

Firmware issue:

According to HP's own official documentation, a firmware option exists to remove Dynamic Security restrictions on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_11469335-11469393-16

I downloaded the official HP firmware 1910A and attempted to install it.

However, although the HP updater correctly detects my printer, it displays "Not applicable" and refuses to proceed.

I have also reviewed similar reports from other HP 8610 owners running exactly the same firmware FDP1CN2022AR.

My request to HP:

I am not requesting another standard cartridge cleaning or reset procedure, as these steps have already been completed.

I would like HP to clarify the following:

  1. Which official firmware or procedure removes Dynamic Security restrictions from an OfficeJet Pro 8610 currently running FDP1CN2022AR?

  2. Why does the official HP firmware update utility reject the 1910A firmware as "Not applicable"?

  3. How can I obtain the firmware removal option described in HP's official documentation?

  4. If this option is no longer available for my firmware version, could HP please provide a written technical explanation?

I respectfully request that this case be escalated to the HP firmware technical support team or an appropriate specialist.

I would appreciate being contacted by an HP Support Agent through private messaging if a specific procedure or firmware file must be provided privately.

I can supply screenshots of the firmware utility, cartridge errors and printer configuration.

I would like to continue using my otherwise functional printer without being unnecessarily restricted to original HP cartridges.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @Patrice021

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for providing the detailed information. We appreciate the thorough troubleshooting already completed on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610.

Based on the information shared, we understand that the printer recognizes older compatible cartridges but rejects newly purchased compatible HP 950XL/951XL cartridges with the message indicating that one or more cartridges appear to be damaged. We also note that you have already verified cartridge protection settings, performed power resets, cleaned the contacts, and reviewed the HP documentation regarding Dynamic Security.

With respect to your questions, HP does not provide a method to manually disable Dynamic Security on printers where that option is not available through the currently installed firmware. If the printer firmware and HP update utility indicate that the available firmware package is "Not applicable," there is no supported HP procedure to force-install that firmware version or bypass the compatibility validation process.

The "Not applicable" message typically indicates that the firmware package does not meet the installation criteria for the printer's current firmware configuration, regional configuration, or version path. The HP firmware utility therefore prevents the installation from proceeding.

As for the firmware referenced in the HP document, availability of any Dynamic Security update or removal option depends on the specific printer model and firmware pathway supported by HP. If the option is not presented by the printer's currently installed firmware and the HP firmware updater does not offer an eligible update, HP does not have a supported process to manually enable or provide that functionality.

For additional verification, we recommend:

  1. Print a Printer Status Report or Configuration Page and confirm the complete firmware revision currently installed.
  2. Use the HP App or HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) to check for any newer firmware offered directly to the device.
  3. Temporarily test with a genuine HP 950XL or 951XL cartridge, if available, to confirm that the printer's ink delivery system and cartridge detection circuitry are operating normally.
  4. Verify that the newly purchased cartridges are intended specifically for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 regional market in which the printer was originally sold.

Based on the details provided, we would be unable to disable Dynamic Security or provide an unsupported firmware modification procedure. If the printer does not offer a supported firmware path that includes such an option, the functionality cannot be manually enabled through HP-supported methods.

We appreciate the clear information you have shared and hope this helps clarify the current HP-supported position regarding firmware behavior and cartridge compatibility on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hello Hawks_Eye, @Hawks_Eye

Thank you for your detailed response.

However, I believe one important point remains unresolved.

HP's official support page for the OfficeJet Pro 8610 still states:

"For users of non-Original HP ink, a firmware upgrade option to remove the security lock is available."

Furthermore, in a previous HP Support Community discussion dated March 29, 2023, it was stated that firmware version 1910A removes Dynamic Security restrictions:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/I-would-like-to-remove-the-dynamic-secu...

My printer is currently running firmware FDP1CN2022AR, and the official HP utility refuses to install version 1910A.

I understand that HP does not support forcing an older firmware installation. I am not asking HP to provide an unsafe or unsupported modification procedure.

However, I would appreciate a clear technical answer to the following questions:

  1. Does firmware FDP1CN2022AR still contain Dynamic Security restrictions that can reject third-party cartridge chips, or were these restrictions already removed?

  2. If Dynamic Security has been removed from FDP1CN2022AR, what other causes could explain why two complete sets of compatible cartridges from different manufacturers are rejected, while my previous cartridges are recognised?

  3. If Dynamic Security is still active, why does HP continue to advertise a firmware option to remove the security lock for the OfficeJet Pro 8610 when this option cannot be installed on my printer?

  4. Can this case be escalated to HP's firmware engineering or specialist technical support team for clarification and diagnosis?

I have already completed the standard cleaning, cartridge replacement and reset procedures.

I am not asking for these procedures to be repeated. I am asking for a technical explanation and, if available, an official solution that restores the printer's ability to use compatible cartridges.

I would appreciate a specific response regarding firmware FDP1CN2022AR, rather than general information about Dynamic Security.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hello Hawks_Eye,

I am the original author of this topic, previously known as Patrice021. Due to an account access issue, I am now using Patrice0211.

I have posted a detailed follow-up above regarding the firmware FDP1CN2022AR and the unresolved Dynamic Security issue.

Could you please review my questions and escalate this case to HP's technical support team?

Thank you.

Hi @Patrice021

Thank you for your detailed follow-up and for clarifying the account change. We appreciate the time you have taken to document the troubleshooting already completed on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610.

Regarding your questions, HP does not officially support or provide a method to manually disable Dynamic Security on modern printers. Where firmware updates were made available for certain products and firmware paths, those updates were distributed through HP-supported channels and only when applicable to the specific printer configuration. HP does not provide unsupported procedures to bypass, force-remove, or manually disable Dynamic Security protections.

To address your questions as accurately as possible:

HP does not publish detailed technical documentation identifying whether a specific firmware revision, including FDP1CN2022AR, contains particular Dynamic Security enforcement components. As a result, HP Support Community agents do not have access to firmware engineering-level details that would confirm the internal behavior of that firmware version.

If previously used compatible cartridges are recognized while newly purchased compatible cartridges are rejected, possible causes may include cartridge chip compatibility, chip design revisions from the cartridge manufacturer, regional compatibility differences, or cartridge electronics that are not recognized by the printer. HP cannot verify compatibility or functionality of third-party cartridge designs.

The HP document you referenced discusses firmware options that may apply to eligible printers and supported firmware pathways. Availability depends on the printer model, firmware history, regional configuration, and eligibility criteria. If the HP firmware utility reports the package as "Not applicable," there is no HP-supported method to install that firmware package manually or bypass the validation process.

While we understand your request for a firmware engineering review, the HP Support Community is limited to publicly available information and does not have access to internal firmware engineering analysis, unpublished firmware files, or technical explanations beyond officially released documentation.

It may also be helpful to understand the purpose of Dynamic Security. This technology is designed to help maintain cartridge authentication, printer reliability, print quality consistency, security, and the integrity of the printing system. For this reason, HP does not officially provide a customer-accessible setting to disable Dynamic Security functionality where such an option is not already available through an approved firmware path.

We understand you are seeking a technical explanation rather than additional cartridge troubleshooting, and we hope this helps clarify HP's supported position regarding firmware availability and Dynamic Security behavior on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610.

Hawks_Eye

Hello Hawks_Eye,

Thank you for your detailed response.

I understand that HP Community agents do not have access to detailed firmware engineering information and cannot provide unsupported firmware modification procedures.

However, I would like to draw your attention to three screenshots taken from HP's official support website and firmware update utility, which demonstrate the apparent contradiction between HP's documentation and the technical limitations affecting my printer.

1. HP officially advertises a firmware update to remove the security lock

On the official HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 product support page, HP explicitly states:

"For users of non-Original HP ink, a firmware upgrade option to remove the security lock is available."

[INSERT SCREENSHOT 1 – HP 8610 official support page] HP_8610_1_annonce_correctif_pour_forum.png

This statement appears directly on the support page for my exact printer model.

2. HP's official Dynamic Security documentation confirms that the HP 8610 is eligible

HP's document entitled:

HP Inkjet printers – Dynamic Security feature affecting cartridges using non-HP security chip

explicitly states:

"HP has a firmware update that removes the dynamic security feature."

More importantly, the documentation specifically includes the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 among the models for which this update disables Dynamic Security regardless of the printer's manufacturing date.

The document also illustrates the exact error message displayed by my printer:

"One or more cartridges appear to be damaged."

[INSERT SCREENSHOT 2 – HP Dynamic Security documentation] HP_8610_2_document_securite_dynamique.png

Official HP documentation:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_11469335-11469393-16

My printer meets all three conditions described in this document:

  • It is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8610.

  • I am using third-party cartridges containing non-HP security chips.

  • It displays the exact cartridge error illustrated in HP's documentation.

3. The official HP firmware update utility refuses to install the corrective firmware

My printer is currently running firmware FDP1CN2022AR.

I downloaded and ran the official HP firmware update utility for version 1910A, which has previously been recommended in HP Support Community discussions to remove Dynamic Security restrictions.

The utility correctly detects my HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 and identifies its installed firmware.

However, it refuses the installation and displays:

"Not applicable"

[INSERT SCREENSHOT 3 – HP firmware updater displaying "Not applicable"] HP_8610_3_firmware_non_applicable.jpg

I have also tested two complete sets of compatible cartridges from different manufacturers, with identical results.

My previous compatible cartridges were recognised, although they were empty.

I understand that these observations do not conclusively prove that Dynamic Security is responsible for the cartridge failures.

However, there is a clear apparent contradiction between HP's published documentation, which advertises a firmware option to remove Dynamic Security on the OfficeJet Pro 8610, and the inability to install that option on my printer.

4. My request for technical clarification and escalation

I would therefore appreciate precise answers to the following questions:

  1. Does the advertised Dynamic Security removal option remain available for HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 printers running firmware FDP1CN2022AR?

  2. If this option is no longer available for this firmware, why does HP continue to advertise it on the official support page for this printer model without clearly explaining the applicable restrictions?

  3. Can HP provide an official diagnostic or supported solution to restore compatibility with third-party cartridges?

  4. Could this issue please be escalated to HP's firmware engineering team or a specialist technical support department capable of providing a definitive answer?

I am not requesting an unsafe or unsupported firmware modification procedure.

I am requesting clarification and access to the official solution advertised by HP, if applicable.

I am also initiating a formal written complaint with HP France in order to obtain an official technical response.

Please do not mark this issue as resolved, as my printer remains unusable.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards.

Hello Hawks_Eye,

Thank you for your reply and for recommending that I contact HP's regional technical support team.

I agree that my case now requires assistance from a dedicated HP technical specialist rather than further Community troubleshooting.

However, there is an additional problem preventing me from following your instructions.

I have already tried the official HP France support portal:

https://support.hp.com/fr-fr/contact

Unfortunately, the website systematically rejects my HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 serial number with the error message:

"Serial number incorrect. Please check your serial number and try again."

This is the serial number displayed in the printer's own HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). The product is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8610, model A7F64A.

As a result, I cannot complete the product identification process or access the regional support contact options you recommended.

I can provide a screenshot showing this error.

Could you please help me with one of the following options?

  1. Provide a direct contact for HP France's technical support or customer relations department that does not require online serial number validation.

  2. Create or escalate a support case internally and provide me with a case reference number.

  3. Arrange for the appropriate HP regional support team to contact me directly.

I would also appreciate a written record of the technical response, as this issue has already been extensively documented.

My request concerns the firmware removal option explicitly advertised on HP's official OfficeJet Pro 8610 support page, but which I am unable to install.

Thank you for helping me reach the appropriate support team.

Best regards.

Hey! I am dealing with the same exact issue with same printer and firmware. Did you ever get a resolution? So weird we’re dealing with the same issue on the same day.

HP Recommended

Hello angelnina,

Thank you for your message!

Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet.

My HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 is running exactly the same firmware, FDP1CN2022AR.

I have tested two complete sets of compatible ink cartridges from different manufacturers, and both were rejected with the message "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged."

My older compatible cartridges are still recognised, although they are empty.

I also tried installing HP firmware 1910A, which is intended to remove certain Dynamic Security restrictions, but the official HP updater refuses the installation with the message "Not applicable."

HP Support has not provided a working solution and has referred me to regional technical support.

It is particularly interesting that you are experiencing exactly the same issue.

Could you please tell me:

  1. Were your compatible cartridges working before, or were they rejected from the first installation?

  2. Have you tried cartridges from different manufacturers?

  3. Did the problem appear after a firmware update, or did it happen without any apparent change?

Your answers could help us determine whether this is a firmware compatibility issue affecting multiple HP 8610 printers.

Perhaps we can work together to get HP to investigate this properly.

Thank you!
