OFFICEJET 8610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello guys,

My HP 8610 printer reports all of our genuine printer cartridges are too old.

There is a firmware update which allows older and non genuine cartridges to be used.

I downloaded the 6910-e firmware updater but it reports ' Not Applicable' and will not do anything more.  I also used the printers web services, it also says the printer is up to date.  driver version 13.33.0.2473.

If it is up to date, why does it still have an issue with older and non-genuine cartridges?

Any thoughts? 🙂

Hi,

@jaydeetech- older generation cartridges cannot be used with the printer, regardless of its firmware version.

Replacing the cartridges with updated cartridges, which their Warranty Ends date is 2014/10/01 or later should resolve the problem:

@KEVINNORMAN  - You should install firmware 1828A to resolve the problem:

Hi Shlomil,

Thank you, that is disapointing.

Genuine printer carridges, warrentied to 2021and they dont work in a HP printer in 2020. Given the price that HP charge for geniune parts it is not a very posative experiance of HP after sales supplies.

I think I will try cheaper non-genuine as I see little point buying more stock of HP parts for them to become Obselete on a HP whim.

Thanks anyway. J.

What is the exact error message shown in the printer screen @jaydeetech?

What is the exact cartridge number and zone listed on its label? (e.g Z20)

2019 CARTS AND 2018 ARE NOT USABLE ON MY OJP8610 WITH 1910AR FIRMWARE(THANKS HP).  PRINTER SAYS THEY ARE OUT OF DATE PLEASE INSERT NEW CARTS TO CONTINUE

Hi Kevin,

I've had some time to calm down and just have to accept that early production HP ink Carts wont work with middle age and newer printers..I suspect alot of this stock is being pushed out at slightly reduced price by less than honest suppliers, who may well be aware of this problem already. I dont know enought to be sure that a HP firmware stoped the use of these carts or if it has always been that way since I bought two HP8610.

However with the change in firmware I can certainly run  Non HP ink Carts, there are plenty of options here in the UK and they backup their products such that if they dont work for any reason there is a refund. Print quality and lifetime seems to be totally fine but at about 2/5th the price of Genuine HP ink its not a hard decision.

The HP printer hardware has proven to be very good for me...but the feeling HP hikes the price on post sales ink supply is hard to shift.

I THOUGHT THAT THE 1910AR FIRMWARE WAS TO DISABLE THE DYNAMIC SECURITY FEATURE ON THE HP 8610 PRINTER, BUT MINE STILL WILL not USE 2019 CARTS WHY IS THIS THE CASE??  SINCE HP WAS SUED AND LOST ON THIS SIMILAR PROBLEM.

I may be incorrect but I understand that the firmware only disabled the blocking of thrid party ink.

The issue we have both experianced is older version ink carts. I was trying to find out from HP if this was a 'choice' on their part to not allow these older carts, maybe becasue these early version carts were easier for third party groups to replicate. Or was there another fundametnatl reason to stop seemingly compatible genuine HP carts working with thier own product.

HP support have been roundly usless on that point.  J.
