Thats not really a fix.  You might need web services - for example if you want to use instant ink.

I agree its not a fix.

Interesting, this is kind of what I mean that getting information in various threads just wastes time and causes confusion.

> Eventually I got through to someone at HP Support UK (not sure where you are?) and he talked me through removing then reinstalling web services via the HP app on my Mac. All very easy - just a matter of finding it all in the advanced settings.

> I was then told that HP are working on a fix and I'll be notified when to turn the 'auto update' back on again.

Eventually I did a factory reset (because disabling auto updates leads to "This feature has been locked by the person who set up the printer".... rolls eyes). As a follow up I will probably isolate it from the internet completely.

At least I could get rid of that HP not-so-smart App as well.

Good luck to all the future travellers that hit this bug.

Hi,

I saw all the solution you have shared and tried them but it didn’t fix the problem.
The printer continues to try to download the update and fails to install it. Sometimes I see that it downloads it 100% but still come to the same screen “unable to download”.
Is it possible at least to stop the printer to try continuously to download the update?
It’s interfering with me using flawlessly my printer.
thanks

yves

@Stepsie - I also have MacOS but when I go to the HP support driver download page it does not show the firmware file (only gives option to install SmartAp - which I already have and tried).

Do you have a direct link to the new firmware file for MacOS. I found a direct link to download Windows firmware file but that of course doesn’t work on my Mac.

@Scott678

below is the instructions from an earlier post of mine. Just tried the link and it still works.

”I went to www.hp.com and selected support / drivers / printers

try the link below, it auto detects what OS you are using, but you can change it to whatever OS you like.

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8020e-all-in-one-printer-series/38...

it will also give you the option to download the iOS support App, but I didn’t use that.

Good luck”

Hi @Stepsie. Thanks for the quick reply. But when I follow the link, it only shows (1) file that can be downloaded (which is the HP Smart app). I don’t have the firmware download as an option. Is there any chance you could post the direct link to the firmware download (the http address when you click the link to download). Thanks!

That is very odd, it used to be listed

I still have the .dmg file, but I cannot attach it here unfortunately.

Try searching for:

OJP8020_8030_2314A.dmg

That is the file name

Hi,

The solution is not to change auto update, you can't do that currently. Not usefull to change your driver too because the problem is the firmware of the printer.

To upgrade it, you need to install the last firmware here:

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8020e-all-in-one-printer-series/38...

Unfortunately, it's the Windows version. I don't know how find the Mac version.

Thanks @Vince_17.  I had an idea to get the MacOS link by copying your link and changing exe to dmg.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/ojp8020_8030/OJP8020_8030_2314A.dmg

It worked!  It took me directly to the MacOS link and I was finally able to update my printer's firmware.
