I posted the following query some time back but got no answer...
"When I send images from an iPad to the Photosmart 6510 I don't get a chance to select which paper tray I want to use. I quite often want to use the A4 tray but the dialog box on the iPad does not give me the opportunity to select. It goes to the 4x6 tray.
Is there some setting in the setup which allows this to happen?
I have checked with the Apple community forum and the Apple online help pages but the only reponse given is to check with the printer manufacturer - HP.
I am sure this iPad/printer combination has worked in the past and I suspect the endless updates that Apple goes through has simply deleted this function. I have also gone through the system settings on the printer and though I had found the errant setting about first paper tray - but this doesn't work and I'm not sure sure what it does do. (Setup/Preferences/External Device Printing:Prompt for tray).
Anyone have any good ideas on what might be wrong?"
Since then I've tried the Apple Community and they have washed their hands of it saying I should contact the printer manufacturer. As I am not aware of how Apple (or HP) deals with printer drivers I am at a loss! In windows you just update the driver. Who knows what you do with an Apple!

Mobile Printing - HP Smart
In the case of paper and size selection, the choice / setting has to be made first, preferably before you open your image / photo to be printed.
If HP Smart Mobile is supported on your older printer, then the following is relevant.
At least parts of the information might be relevant anyway...
Set / check the paper settings using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
EWS can also be reached from within HP Smart Mobile - see the example later in this message.
=============================================================================
Note the mention of selecting "Custom" size in the printer display / EWS when exact dimensions are not listed.
Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel
Section is not applicable to printers lacking a printer display panel.
Open Printer Tray,
If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type
Wait a couple of seconds…
Close Tray
IF applicable for your printer:
Look for a message on the Printer Control / Display Panel,
Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK
Note – Printer Display Panel > Adjusting the paper size:
If the size of your Paper Size is not in the Drop-down menu,
If available: Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)

Embedded Web Server (EWS)
EWS option is applicable to network connected printers.
If the printer is on the network,
If the EWS feature is supported on your printer,
Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / configure your printer.
EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)
Click Apply to save changes
EWS - HP Smart for Mobile - iOS
Reminder: The EWS Tray and Paper settings must be updated before you open the object to be printed.
Open HP Smart (for mobile)
Open Settings
Open Add / Set Up a Printer
Scroll down, Click, Tray and Paper
As Available: Check / Adjust settings in Advanced
Click Apply to save changes
EWS - HP Smart – Windows
Start HP Smart Application
Printer Settings
In section Settings > Advanced
Tab Settings > Preferences
Tray and Paper Management
As Available: Check / Adjust settings in Advanced
Click Apply to save changes
If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)
Click Apply to save changes
NOTES
- Size not listed in the Drop-down menu? If available: Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)
- EWS is also available in HP Smart Windows and HP Smart Mobile > Settings > Advanced
- Features and options differ by printer model and type.

Set the Preferences – Windows
This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.
Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver and / or might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" (or similar) from within printing software / applications.
Preferences and Envelopes:
Select / leave Printing Preferences shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Thanks for the information, but none of it seems to apply to the HP Photosmart 6510. I have gone through the "Setup" menu thoroughly and found one setting "Setup/Preferences/External Device Printing/" that offers three alternatives: "Prompt for tray", "Photo tray" and "Main tray". The first one doesn't prompt - it only offers the Photo tray when printing images. The second does the same and the third when set doesn't give you the Main tray. In effect, all three settings give the Photo tray when the printer is given an image to print.
What is Embedded Web Server? It is not on the menu at all. I am using the Apple iPad system of AirPrint.
As this facility used to work properly with a choice of paper feed when the printer was selected on the iPad I can only assume that in the process of updating the software (Apple or HP or both) this facility has been messed up.

You are welcome.
I am not surprised that HP Smart is not available on your printer - HP Smart is a newer application and is apparently (likely) just not supported on your older hardware. Rats.
EWS stands for Embedded Web Server.
Where available and supported, EWS provides access to the printer view and some of the configuration / settings.
If the printer is on the network, EWS might be supported.
Try using your browser to connect to EWS.
Sure, it is possible that updating managed to munge something important.
Unfortunately, I have neither an old printer nor any printer that is dependent solely on AirPrint.
So - a waste of time - apologies for the Easter egg hunt.
