I have the same problem and have seen many requests with this problem, the install starts and just disappears after two pages. No help, no response.  Does HP actually have any customer service ? Is there any way of asking HP directly for assistance? I have a strong impression that they don't give a **bleep** ! I will not purchase from this company again !!

Ok here is how i fixed this issue thanks to Roinboin's post, I will just elaborate a bit more on it.  So I downloaded the installer I needed from the HP website for my OS which is a datacab(zip file).  The file I grabbed looks like this, but yours may look different depending on your OS.   "PS_AIO_06_C4700_USW_Full_Win_enu_140_175"  I use 7-zip for my zip files http://www.7-zip.org/, but winzip works fine.  Right click it and extract the datacab to your desktop (or where ever you want).  Plug in the USB cable for your printer and go into device manager.  Under my printer driver it showed the C4780 but under the "sub drivers" which is an incorrect term but im tired and want to go to sleep, the 2 items had exclamation marks which means they are not installed.  Just right click the first one and select "update driver software", then "Browse my computer for driver software", then click the browse button and make sure the include subfolders box is ticked. then point to the folder that you extracted and it will install the driver for that "part of the device".  Follow the same step for the second unrecognized device.  I realize that I am really going overboard with my directions here but hopefully it helps someone out, not everyones computer knowledge is the same, and hopefully i havent confused anybody here either.

ERROR:
HP Installer (Setup for Scanners, Printers of Hewlett Packard) fails in Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. This happens regardless of your setup version or product/device. The following erros occure
1. HP Installer has stopped working
2. Please wait some more
3. A fatal error has occured, which prevents usage of the device.

SOLUTION:
Go to Control Panel / Programs and Featuers / Windows-Components and select ".NET Framework 3.5.1" or ".NET Framework 3.5 (includes 2.0 and 3.0)" [exact wording depends on your OS]. Once this feature is installed simply run your setup flawlessly.

BACKGROUND:
HP Installer checks prerequisites (such as free space and ram). If it does not find .NET framework it attempts to install this one via a .NET Framework Redistributable. Unfortunately this procedure has been deprecated by Microsoft (from now on you need to select this feature manually [or install it via console with DISM / Powershell-Cmdlets]). The installer stupidly assumes that the framework got installed and continues which causes crashes and sideeffects... (for details see %temp%\hpbcsiInstallerBootstrap.log ).

PS: Shame on you HP because this error exists since years (before 2010 until v15 in 2016!).
@HP: refunds welcome
