I bought an HP Envy in June 2025 and successfully set this up with my chromebook via wifi. However documents printed directly came out with lines of text half printed and overlapping (unreadable). I contacted HP Support via Whatsapp and was told to install the HP Smart app and print via that. I did this and, although this meant extra steps (which I wasn't happy about), this did mean I could print readable documents.
However, I understand the HP Smart app was updated on 7 August 2025 and today when I have tried to print the app would not open. I checked for updates in the Play store but it no longer displays the app and says it is no longer compatible with my device. As before, if I try and print directly without using the app, the documents misprint.
I have updated my chromebook. My chromebook will receive all updates until 2029. I unistalled the HP Smart app with the intention of reinstalling but then discovered it was not available to me so now I don't have it on the chromebook at all.
HP Support told me the app was never available for chromebook even though they had previously advised me to isntall and use it! It had been available in the Play store on my chromebok and had worked. The then suggested I would have to use another device but I am not inundated with laptops! Nor can I justify getting a whole new device just so I can get the app for my 70 quid printer!
Why have HP issued an app update which is incompatible with chromebooks? These are quite ubiquitous devices these days.
Does anyone know of a workaround for this?
Thanks

Hi @HomeEdBoss
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for taking the time to explain the situation — and you’re absolutely right to feel frustrated here. You've done everything correctly, and the loss of compatibility between the HP Smart app and your Chromebook, after previously relying on it to print correctly, creates a real and unnecessary obstacle.
Let’s walk through what’s happened, what your options are, and any potential workarounds you can try right now — without having to buy another device.
Workaround Options
Here are your current best alternatives without buying another device:
1. Use HP Print for Chrome Extension
This was deprecated for a while, but some users have had success reinstating it manually.
Go to the Chrome Web Store
Search for: “HP Print for Chrome”
If it doesn’t appear, try visiting this archived link directly:
HP Print for Chrome (Archived Link)
Install it if available, and try printing again through that extension
This may allow better formatting than the default IPP driver.
2. Use HP’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) to Upload Files
If the Smart app isn’t an option and direct printing fails, you can try printing through the printer’s IP address.
On your printer, tap the Wi-Fi icon to view the IP address
On your Chromebook, open a browser and enter the printer’s IP (e.g., 192.168.1.200)
This opens the HP Embedded Web Server
Look for a Web Services / Print / Web Upload feature
Some Envy models allow you to upload a file to print directly from this page
It’s a bit of a workaround, but bypasses the bad formatting issue.
3. Install the HP Smart App on an Android Phone or Tablet (Temporary Use)
If you have access to any Android or iOS device, you can still install the HP Smart app from the respective store:
Even if you don't want to use that device long-term, it can help when you need to print properly formatted documents.
4. Use HP Smart Web (Limited Features)
Try using the HP Smart web-based platform, though it’s limited:
Go to: HP Smart Web
Sign in with your HP account
Add your printer (if not already registered)
Attempt to upload and print documents directly
This method doesn't fully replace the app, but might get you through basic printing.
Let me know your printer’s exact IP or if you'd like help walking through one of these methods. I’ll be glad to guide you step-by-step.
