HP Smart App vs Installation Software

I have been using  9010 officejet printer with Smart App.

Support Assistance says now ready to download and install Installation Software 49.11.4679.2245

(Latest version on HP website is 49.11.4644??)

I have no software on PC other than the Smart App and Support software.

1) What does this large 200mB+ software do?

2) Do I need it

Welcome to the HP User Community.

The Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software supports printing and scanning (HP Scan).

For example,

• Support and access is supported for printing / scanning (HP Scan)
• Other programs (for example, Word)
• Photo and Document printing / editing software (for example, Irfanview, Adobe Reader)
• Web browsers
• Other applications (for example, HP Scan and Capture, NAPS2)

The Full Driver printer software supports access to the full range of printer preferences / shortcuts

Set Printing Preferences – Windows

NOTES

• This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.
• Access to the complete Printer Preferences requires having installed the Full Driver printer software.
• The printer should be selected as the default and current printing device.
• Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver. 
• Printing Envelopes?  See NOTE

Windows 11

Settings > System > Bluetooth & devices > Printers and scanners

Check the list of devices – Select / Open Printer > Select Printing Preferences

Windows 11 – Settings Path to “Devices and Printers”

Settings > System > Bluetooth & devices > Scroll down > Devices and printers

Windows 10

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences

• When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” / "Printer Setup" or similar.

• No Size?  If the size of the Paper Size is not included in the Drop-down list, consider / try:  Create a Custom Paper Size Form.  Reference:  HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

NOTE >> Word > Mailings > Envelopes  :: Preferences and Envelopes 

Select / leave Printing Preferences Shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Thanks for detailed response.

But i can do all of this using the Smart App, so why install the additional software - does it do aanything extra?

OK - 

If you believe you already have what you want and what you need, you need not install anything else.

Whether you install the full driver software is entirely up to you.

Access to alternatives is nice, but certainly not mandatory.

IF HP Smart ever fails or does not do what you need, you can decide to install the printer software at that time.
