Over10-months ago, I submitted the same question as found in the title above.  So far, no real answer.  OK experts, just where is the backup file for printer settings stored stored?

HP Smart Backup and Restore - Where is file saved?

So far, no answer from anyone telling me where the HP Smart Backup file is stored when Backing Up the printer settings.  To get to HP Smart Backup and Restore page:

  1. Open HP Smart app.
  2. Click on Printer Settings.
  3. Click on Advanced Settings.
  4. Click on Tools.
  5. Click on Backup and Restore.
  6. Read Back Up Device Settings that state: "The Backup feature allows you to create a password-encrypted file that stores the printer's settings."
  7. Question: Having performed all the steps required, and saving the backup file, where does the backup file go?  It's not to be found in Desktop, Documents, or Downloads folders.

Hi,

From HP Smart select Printer Settings and note the IP Address of your printer.

Open any browser such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox and type this IP into the address bar to load the EWS page of the printer.

Now click on Tools. click on Backup and Restore and follow the steps on screen, your web browser will download a backup file, open the Downloads dialog to locate its saved location.

Generally, this can be done from a web browser and not from within the HP Smart app, just launch the EWS page from any web browser and then the backup would be saved.

ShlomiL, Thank you very much.

Follow-on Question please: When I backup printer settings from the HP Smart/Printer Settings/Advanced Settings/Tools/Backup and Restore/Backup and click on Save (no place to enter file location), just where does that backup file go?  I have searched the entire hard drive for filename (usrdata.enc), but only the backup saved via the browser can be found.

Does this mean that any settings backups made via HP Smart are useless because a backup file was never really created?

Thankfully, I just wanted to add that ShlomiL kindly provided a "work-around" process for saving the Settings backup file where it can be retrieved.

However, until I get an answer to my follow-up question posted yesterday, and until HP fixes what appears to be an HP Smart software/app oversight (bug), the solution will remain at least partially unacceptable.

Hello HP...are you out their listening???
