Spent lengthy time with Support today and they were never able to get the HP Smart app to scan.
The way around it is to do this:
- Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads
- Type in your product name and select it.
- Go to the "Software-Utility" section at the bottom.
- Download the "Printer Setup Software - Offline Use Only" package and install it.
- Use a scanning app (like Scan in the MS Store) to now happily use your scanner.
It seems with HP Smart they don't put the scanner drivers on your machine, they're using a web service to do this and that's why you have to log in. By installing the full drivers you get the scanner drivers and your printer will now behave like every other scanner that Windows/MacOS will see directly.
Hopefully, HP will either scrap this "scan in the cloud" functionality or fix their app for the many here who can't use it. Personally, I always hated I had to log into this app just to scan something, I'm glad it's set up this way now and I can just scan away.

@GuyFinley Unfortunately this option wasn't available with my printer (ENVY 5055). However, another workaround was to Download the app on my phone and use the features that way. It instantly logged me in with no wait time and I have access to all the features remotely.

Yeah I just got a envy pro 6458 and reinstalled the app on windows many times and all I get when signing in is thanks for waiting. I think I am going to trade this in after getting this and get the brother printer. Unless they will fix this I have 2 weeks to return it.

I agree.
We have bought these printers, sitting near our computer to just print off and scan etc. what we want, all within seconds. NOT to spend hours ( yes it can take hours to sort these things out !!!! ) re-installing software and setting up logging in info ( which is unessesary for JUST printing and scanning ! ) just to printoff or scan something that ( in the old days !!!) took a couple of minutes or even seconds.
yes, we understand that this is an amazing low cost alternative to just pay for the paper and keep tabs on how many we have used ( via sending info online ) But Pleeeese., have a back up option ( when there is no connection ) when all we want to do is JUST PRINT SOMETHING OFF IN SECONDS

A technical way round this ( if HP ever looks through these posts !!!! ) from printing off or scan something quick without waiting for a connection or loggin in delay is to create a log ( in the background ) on the persons personal PC when the user prints or scans etc. and let them print or scan in that moment. Then when there is a good internet connection to HP ( in the background of course ) sometime when tyhey are using the PC for other things, update the log with a HP server to update the users paper use etc.
The user can ALWAYS print/scan imedietly and the users paper usage etc. will always get updated but . . . not create a bottle neck when the Internet is down or not configured correctly etc. when the user needs to print out something in an emergency or just in the moment etc.
I have found a work around though for scanning. I have an old version of Paint Shop Pro ( which you can download for free on the net ), so I can scan directly from this software package without going through the HP login process ( which I still haven't sorted out after a couple of months !!!! ) and then save the image on your PC.
