I have found HP Smart of be quite buggy.  Some things seem to improve over time, while other crop up.

My current problem is that I can't seem to get to the page that tells me how many pages I have left on my toner.  I know it is only an estimate, but that is better than just judging based on how much color is on the temperature-gauge-sorta-thing.

Whenever I dip in to "Supply Status" it returns to the main screen and opens a page offering to buy more product....but I don't know which to buy!  When I click on "Printer Status" it tells me that access to the internet is not possible...but I am on the internet entering this question at the same time.

Of note: while I would expect IPv6 routing to be turned on anyway, I only see an IPv6 address on the printer.  Why abandon IPv4 so soon?  I expect you would have a lot of problems with clients that don't support that yet.

This does nothing to actually help the buggy software, but I was able to find what I needed.  Your software QC department should all be fired.  I'm now fighting with the printer in a "Service error 79" loop which started before I even tried to put the new toner in.

Hi @RJNile,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's unfortunate to hear that you're experiencing issues with the HP Smart app and accessing the toner status for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. Here are some suggestions to help you troubleshoot the problem.

Check Connectivity:

  • Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Confirm that the device running the HP Smart app is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
  • If you're using a mobile device, make sure that mobile data is turned off, and the device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.

Update HP Smart:

  • Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed on your device. Check for updates on the app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store).

Printer Firmware Update:

  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your HP printer. Firmware updates can address connectivity and functionality issues.

Restart Devices:

  • Try restarting both your printer and the device running the HP Smart app. This simple step can often resolve connectivity issues.

Reinstall HP Smart:

  • Uninstall the HP Smart app from your device, restart the device, and then reinstall the app. This can help to clear any temporary glitches.

Access Toner Status via Web Interface:

  • Open a web browser and enter the printer's IP address in the address bar to access the printer's web interface. You can usually find the toner status information there.

IPv6/IPv4 Settings:

  • While IPv6 is becoming more prevalent, many networks still primarily use IPv4. Check your router settings to ensure that both IPv4 and IPv6 are enabled, especially if you're experiencing internet access issues.

Manual Toner Status:

  • While not as convenient, you can also check the toner levels directly on the printer's display. Navigate to the printer menu and look for an option like "Supplies" or "Toner Status."

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
