I've been running my Officejet Pro 8720 for several years now through the HP Smart App. All of a sudden I now get "Printer Status Unknown", and any functions tell me to either sign in or make a new account, but allows me to do neither, reverting back to the home screen of HP Smart. I have made no software changes on my Windows 10 laptop, nor made any changes to my printer. I've tried deleting and re-installing HP Smart, double & triple checked that my WiFi settings were correct. While I can print form applications, HP Smart has become non-functional and I have no way to scan from my laptop, which I need to do frequently.

Hi,
Thanks for using the HP Support Community.
Can you download and install the FULL featured printer software from HP for your operating system:
https://support.hp.com/sg-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-...
Once you have downloaded and installed the FULL feature software, you will be able to print and scan.
These resources will be useful on scanning:

I have installed the software package, but it does not solve HP Smart not functioning. Outside of the HP Smart App, there is no quick/easy way to scan from the computer, running the basic HP printer icon is too slow and clunky.

Hi @PeteC22
We're providing an alternative way to scan using the HP FULL software.
HP Smart requires an account and sign-in to use. It has change to this model recently.
Try to create an account and sign in to HP Smart, you should be able to scan.
Hope that helps!

Even with the account addition I still get Printer Status unknown from HP SMART. I've removed endpoint security, etc. Uninstalled/resinstalled. Remove printers/drivers and done full and basic, etc, etc, etc -> STILL broken

Yes, clearly there is an issue with the HP Smart app. It's unfortunate since HP uses the app for installing a new HP printer. Hopefully they can rectify it soon. You can install it with the separate "full package" drivers and it will work as it should, but I imagine a number of new printer buyers will be frustrated with the HP Smart installation routine.
