@dalthomali, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I understand you are not able to connect and print from your Mac to the printer. Let us try these steps:
Check for any software updates on Mac
Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.
Make sure the cable is directly connected between the Mac and the printer.
The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac.
Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the Mac? If yes, disable the same for time being.
You may check this in System Information > Applications.
- Check if the printer is getting recognized by your Mac:
- From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
- Click System Report.
- Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.
USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus
Click here to download the printer software via the HP Easy Start app.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Is the printer listed on the Mac under USB devices?
Did you try installing the driver via HP Easy Start?
Keep me posted.

I have an Envy 4500 which worked fine up until last year when it suddenly refused to scan. There is a way around that which I have used. About three months ago it suddenly refused to print and is apparently not accepted by my computer (Mac OS X 11.3). I have tried everything suggested by HP - I even bought a new printer (Deskjet 3700) and that won't work either. The only way I can get either printer to work is through my iPad, which is not satisfactory. I have also tried linking computer and printer by cable and that doesn't work.
I did manage to get the new printer to work through Wi-Fi Direct, but that means changing the network name every time I want to print which is also not satisfactory.
I subscribe to the HP Ink program and that failed to connect with my computer for a while, but that has now been rectified, I think. I would be very grateful for a solution, otherwise I shall have to find another printer (not HP!)

If the printer is not seen under the USB section on the Mac, you have to check the connectivity. Try a different USB cable or a different USB port on the Mac.
Check my initial post to troubleshoot USB connectivity issues.
If the issue persists, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team.
Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance.
You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.
