HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 All-in-One Printer

I haven't been able to print from my PC since a Window update Christmas 2023.

I've been through all the community stuff. Downloaded all suggested software, uninstalled, reinstalled, engaged with HP Support and again, today, I need to print, execute, scan, PDF, and return a contract and I've had to do it from my wife's Windows 10 machine.

I can't get any method to change the status of "Driver Unavailable".

Does anyone know how I can fix this withour saying:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/closure/hp-officejet-pro-9010-all-in-one-printer-series/2390305...

Use HP (don't) Easy Start.

Nothing is working. I'm on the verge of buying a new printer and I've just ordered £138 worth of cartridges...

Replacing the printer is, of course, your choice.

Logic is in the beholder.

I recently retired a perfectly fine OfficeJet Pro 9025 (purchased 2019) and replaced it with an OfficeJet Pro 9135e.

True - all new ink and I did have a surplus of the ink for the 9025.

That said, replacing the printer because software does not install on one PC might be overkill.

Worse, if the source of the problem preventing the printer software from installing is due to network or issues deep in your Operating System, those issues might impact installing software for a new printer.  This is at least true with Windows where the source of problems of this type can be buried deep in the file system -- Nothing short of reloading the OS can clear certain errors.

-------------------------------------------------

I can offer some places to (re)check.

Skip or ignore what you will -

Should you miss something and the result is disappointing, start over and / or add the missed step(s).

The printer supports Ethernet - this is generally your best option - consider using it if possible.

The first sections are preparation for adding the printer to your PC (unknown Operating System).

If you are using MacOS, stop at the point where you will be checking the file system and (re)installing the software.  What?   You must needs use your own experience to check for hiding pieces of previously installed software and then find and install the software.

Printer - Specifications

Product Specifications for the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 All-in-One Printer (3UK83B)

Connectivity

Ports
1 USB 2.0; 1 Host USB; 1 Ethernet; 1 Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n; 2 RJ-11 modem ports
Wireless capability
Yes, built-in WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n
Storage device and direct print support
Front-facing USB/Flash drive

The printer supports an older protocol for 5GHz -

If you are forced to use Wireless, consider connecting the printer to the SSID named network for 2.4GHz.

=================================

Printer - Network - IPv4

----------------------------------------------

Dual Band Network - Considerations

Reminders

Do not ignore your router --

A router that is weak, outdated, poorly located, or incorrectly configured can cause all sorts of odd network behavior issues.

If the printer supports it, connecting using Ethernet is generally a better choice.

If your router supports it, create a separate SSID named network for each frequency.

Connect the printer to the SSID network you want the printer to use on the network.

Wireless

Some printers, particularly older models, only support Wireless at 2.4GHz

Some printers support Wireless at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz – but not at the same time

Regardless, if the printer won't work or cannot connect to your 5GHz SSID named network, connect to the 2.4GHz network.

If you are running a Dual Band Network,

Check that the router is set up to broadcast all frequencies it supports.

Next,

If your router supports it,

On your router:

Create a separate SSID named network for each frequency supported by the router

What?  Create one SSID named network for 5GHz and one SSID named network for 2.4GHz

and

Connect the printer to the SSID named network on the frequency / band you want it to use.

In general,

  • 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
  • 5GHz is faster

Printer - Full Feature Software

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

Reinstalling?

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one or more shortcuts to the Desktop.

Note Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model
  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut

Hi Dragon-Fur,

That's all very helpful, thank you. Most of it I've done. I'm on an eero mesh at home and up to Christmas last year it worked fine.

I've given up and put a USB cable to it.

I really, really, really don't like Microsoft and Microsoft 364. Back to the dark ages for me...

I appreciate your post and will have a play when I've time.

You are welcome.

The Windows settings and printing "check and remove" are not so daunting - there is more green text than actual work involved.  That said, sure - it's "Windows" stuff and not everyone is a fan.

Depending on why the installation broke, left over printer software bits from a failed install might not be the source of your issue, after all.

Mesh networks are their own beast.

The printer might be dropping off the network without a way to find its way back.

Whether that impacts "Driver Unavailable" might depend on how the printer software installation is accessing the printer at the point when the software is freshly installed and it needs to "talk to" the printer.

Even after the software installation, should the printer drop from the network at a later time ("Offline"), it (the printer) still needs to find a way back and reconnect to that network.

I think the printer might better tolerate the Mesh network when the IP address is "fixed", that is, set to manual / static.

Best Luck.
