Not sure why you are seeing the "configured for windows 7" message.

I can offer the following limiited advice:

Manually uninstall the existing printer software from Programs and Features.

Restart the computer and log in.

Download and Information Page:

Software and Drivers - HP LaserJet Pro P1100, P1560, P1600 Series Full Feature Software and Driver

At this writing, driver release date is January 5, 2016.

The release date is well within the over all tolerances for Windows 10, though it is true that after three years, things have changed a bit in the latest Windows 10 versions.

Driver supported Operating Systems:

Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 W32
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64
Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows XP x64

You could try installing the software using compatibility for Windows 7 - this still installs the "Windows 10" driver but uses installation rules for the older Windows 7 system.

** Optional - For Windows 10 Users – Compatibility Mode **

If you have been having trouble getting the printer software to fully install, consider using Compatibility.  Note that this method only fixes “one type” of difficulty; installing this way may – or may not – make the necessary difference.

Right-Click on the downloaded installation file > Properties > Compatibility

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

Select Windows 7

Click Apply and OK to close the Properties menu

Right-Click on the installation file and select to Run as Administrator

Thank yiu very much for your response. I followed your instructions and still the program would not install. When I ran the troubleshooter it said incompatible program, as before.  The program worked when I frirst set up the printer a couple of years ago. I'm only having problems now because i was getting an error message when I tried to print. I downloaded and ran Print and Scan Troubleshooter and got a message that there was a software problem and that I should delete and reinstall the software. This is what I have been trying to do.

On a positive note I have  found that the printer does now work with a USB connection so perhaps as I don't really need wireless I'll leave it as is. Or maybe there's something about this that I'm not aware of. Strange?

@RayE3

You are welcome.

Laser printers are a bit outside of my area of expertise - the driver installation is not all that much different but there may be "something" about which I am unaware.

In general,

  • Though the printer software is not "new" at this point, it may still be compatible with Windows 10.
  • Installations tend to be easier (work better) when the most recent Windows Updates are current / installed

That the issue persists with Wireless seems to indicate the issue might not be the actual printer driver but instead is something in the network setup.  In a few cases, at least, (and after making sure the firmware on the printer is updated) it might help to check the router for updates.  Routers can become "outdated" just like other parts of your setup.  IF the router cannot be updated due to it having reached "end of life" support (no more firmware updates), it is possible that the router needs to be replaced with newer equipment.  This is something you would do after having exhausted other avenues (tried everything else you can find).

I have your notes for general issues with installation - not sure which solution to recommend in this case.

Can you comment?
