I have been using Walmart's ONN 61 cartridges for a couple of years, a printer firmware update now blocks them. I have a HP Deskjet 3512 printer and have been seeking solutions on the web. The solutions are not effective because the 3512's screen cannot be swiped and has no options to select as are in the solutions I receive. Thank you.

@Sky1979, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The best way to prevent future firmware updates is to disable automatic updates. Here’s a step-by-step guide to block further firmware updates:

Step 1: Disable Printer Updates via the Printer Software (On Your PC)

  1. Open HP Printer Assistant:
    • On your computer, search for "HP Printer Assistant" or "HP Solution Center" (depending on your HP software version).
    • Open the program.
  2. Find Update Settings:
    • Look for a "Settings" or "Printer Maintenance" tab.
    • Locate an option like "Printer Update," "HP Update," or "Firmware Update."
  3. Disable Automatic Updates:
    • If there’s an option to disable updates, turn it off.
    • If you only have a manual update option, avoid clicking "Update" in the future.

Step 2: Block Updates from HP Smart App (If Installed)

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your PC or phone.
  2. Go to Printer Settings.
  3. Check for Firmware Updates and disable automatic updates.

Step 3: Block HP Update Servers via Your Router

This step prevents your printer from receiving update files:

  1. Log in to your router settings (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Look for Parental Controls, Firewall, or Block List.
  3. Block these HP update domains:
    • ftp.hp.com
    • update.hp.com

Step 4: Downgrade the Printer Firmware (Optional)

If you want to try restoring compatibility with ONN cartridges:

  1. Find an older firmware version for your printer (HP does not officially provide them, but some sites archive them).
  2. Manually install the old firmware by running the downloaded file on your PC.
  3. Reinstall the ONN 61 cartridges and check if they work.

We suggest you use genuine HP 61 ink cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
