Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Some time ago, I bought an HP Color LaserJet MFP M183fw (second-hand from the charity shop I volunteer at) .  I linked it to my hub where I can clearly see it.  I can interrogate the ink levels from my computer (An HP Pavilion about 6 - 7 years old running Win 10 64 bit) but I can't get it to print or scan.  On commanding printing nothing goes into a spool.  Nothing happens at all on attempting to scan.  I do not want *ANY* external access to this printer but do want to access it in my own home from the various computers that I play with and most especially the Pavilion laptop which is my main computer.

I'm a largely self-taught computer user in my mid 70s.  I value my privacy and run Panda Dome and other protective software on the rather unchristian principle that if I make my system awkward enough, the bad actors out there will go somewhere else that is less effort to break into.

Can anyone help me with getting my hardware  to talk politely to each other and do what I want?

The program got to the 4th dot between 2 and 3 then wanted me to close off my firewall.  Since that gives no problem with my even older A3 Brother printer, I went for "retry" and eventually it ran to the end and told me to set it up via a web page.  This has (of course) come up blank, as it did every other time I've tried to set up the printer.  This time I'll leave it for two hours to see if it eventually gets somewhere.  certainly no sign of anything from it over 10 minutes.

Hi,

First, please try printing a Supplies Status page from the printer itself. this to ensure the hardware functionality regarding of the computer connection

https://support.hp.com/si-en/document/c06442758

Next, copy the printed page from the printer itself, does it print and copy as expected on its own, regardless of the computer? or do you see any similar behavior for stand alone actions too?

How is the printer connected to your computer? via a USB connection, a wired or a wireless network connection?

Hi The printer is connected by wifi link.  I have printed out *ALL* the reports and photocopied the demo page.  All is working correctly and degradation in photocopying is barely visible.

I looked for the printer on Device Manager and got this error in the events for trying to install:

Device SWD\PRINTENUM\WSD-54013515-3490-4182-8c83-7d149e84dbc1 requires further installation.

Thanks for clarifying @David_Walland.

Please click the Start button and then the gear (Settings) icon and select Devices, then select Printers & Scanners.

select the listed HP printer and select Remove Device, be sure to confirm any prompt.

Next, download and install its latest software below by selecting a network connection:

Please let me know how it goes,

Shlomi

I waited for anything to happen for nearly an hour then an automatic update for one of the many apps on my system wanted me to restart the system and I had to do so.  There appears to be a problem in the interaction between the drivers and my (always fully updated) Windows 10 system.  I do have an old Windows 7 unit waiting to be converted to Xubuntu, so I'll try if that will communicate with the printer first via Win 7 and if not I'll see if CUPS can talk to it via Xubuntu.  I'll try the Win 7 system today but there'll be a break before I do the same with Xubuntu, as I want to update the unit further first.

Suddenly the printer/scanner has decided to work, although it comes up with various error reports during double sided printing, for some reason.  Thanks for your help.  I wonder why it has been so hard to get it to work.  I've been trying for months, having invested a lot of £s in new inks for it.
