I have installed MacOS 14.4 Sonoma and am unable to print on my HP LaserJet 1020. It complains about a Filter.

I understand you're encountering compatibility issues between your HP LaserJet 1020 printer and MacOS 14.4 Sonoma. This problem might be due to the lack of native support for the printer in the operating system.

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

 

  • Check for Updates: Ensure that your MacOS is fully updated. Sometimes, new updates include drivers or fixes for printer compatibility.  HP LaserJet 1020 Printer series Software and Driver
  • Download and Install Drivers: Visit the HP website and search for the latest drivers for the LaserJet 1020 that are compatible with MacOS 14.4. Download and install these drivers, as they might contain the necessary filters and software to enable printing.
  • Reset Printing System: Sometimes, resetting the printing system can resolve issues. To do this, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, right-click on the printer list, and select "Reset printing system." This action removes all printers and scanners from your list, so you'll need to re-add your HP LaserJet 1020 afterward.
  • Use Generic Drivers: If specific drivers for the HP LaserJet 1020 are not available, try using generic drivers provided by MacOS. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, click the "+" button to add a printer, and see if MacOS detects the printer automatically or offers generic drivers.

What worked for me was to reset the printing system and then download the 1022 driver.  Apparently, the 1022 driver is a suitable surrogate for the 1020.
