I bought a replacement cartridge at the store and I keep getting the error code can't be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink?  Why?

Hi @Cindy9966

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That error usually means the cartridge you bought is an HP Instant Ink or Instant Ink Ready cartridge, which only works if your printer is actively enrolled in the HP Instant Ink subscription service.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Standard HP cartridges (no Instant Ink label) work in any compatible printer.
  • Instant Ink cartridges only work in printers that are currently enrolled in the Instant Ink program.
  • Instant Ink Ready cartridges can be used in any printer only if they’ve never been used in an enrolled printer before. Once used in an enrolled printer, they’re locked to that program.

So if your printer isn’t enrolled—or if you’ve canceled your subscription—you’ll get that error even with a brand-new cartridge.

What You Can Do:

  1. Check the cartridge label — if it says “Instant Ink” or “Instant Ink Ready,” that’s the issue.
  2. Use a standard HP cartridge — one that doesn’t mention Instant Ink.
  3. Re-enroll in HP Instant Ink — if you want to use the cartridge you already bought, you can sign back in at hpinstantink.com and reconnect your printer.

Let me know your printer model and I can help you find the right cartridge or walk you through re-enrollment if needed.
