I just purchased this printer and it came with brand new installed ink cartridges + I purchased a back-up set. I went to follow the prompts for getting this printer set up with each step, and immediately ran into an issue with an error sign saying "Incompatible Supplies". I read a few reviews on here and tried to use them to resolve the issue (reset printer, un-plug, install each cartridge one at a time) .. None of them seemed to work and the message is still there.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi @motthanna,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for sharing the details. The “Incompatible Supplies” error on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw—even with brand-new cartridges—can be frustrating, but it’s often fixable. Here's a step-by-step guide to fix the issue.
1. Perform a Permanent Storage Reset
This is a hidden reset that often resolves supply recognition issues:
- Remove all toner cartridges from the printer.
- Power off the printer and then turn it back on.
- As soon as the white status bar appears at the bottom of the screen during startup:
- Press and hold the bottom-left corner of the touchscreen.
- Keep holding until you see “Permanent Storage Init” on the screen.
- Once the printer restarts:
- Go through the setup steps (language, region, etc.)
- Insert each cartridge one at a time, closing the cover after each one.
This process reinitializes the printer’s memory and often clears the error
2. Double-Check the Cartridges
- Ensure they are genuine HP cartridges (not third-party or Instant Ink).
- Remove any protective tape or packaging.
- Inspect the chip and contacts for damage or dirt.
3. Update Printer Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause supply recognition issues:
- Visit the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw | HP® Support
- Download and install the latest firmware update.
4. Try a Full Power Cycle
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the wall for at least 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
