Hi @Mars2411,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yes, it is possible to add a PIN number to the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw printer to enhance security. This feature allows you to restrict access to certain functions or to ensure secure printing. Here’s how you can set up a PIN on the printer:
Setting Up a PIN on HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw
Access the Printer’s Control Panel:
- Make sure the printer is powered on.
- Navigate to the control panel on the printer.
Open the Setup Menu:
- Use the navigation buttons on the control panel to select the Setup menu. This might also be labeled as Settings.
Navigate to Security Settings:
- Within the Setup menu, look for Security Settings or Secure Print.
Set Up PIN Protection:
- Select the option to set up a PIN or Secure Print. The exact wording might vary.
- You will be prompted to enter a PIN number. Use the numeric keypad on the control panel to enter your desired PIN.
Confirm the PIN:
- Re-enter the PIN to confirm it.
- Save the settings.
Using HP Embedded Web Server (EWS)
Alternatively, you can set up the PIN using the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS), which provides more detailed configuration options:
Access the Embedded Web Server:
- Make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
- Find the printer’s IP address. You can usually find this by printing a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel.
- Enter the printer’s IP address into a web browser to access the EWS.
Login to EWS:
- Log in using the administrator credentials. If you haven't set any, the default credentials might be used.
Navigate to Security Settings:
- In the EWS, go to the Settings or Security tab.
Set Up Secure Print or PIN:
- Look for options related to Secure Print, PIN Printing, or Job Storage.
- Enable the feature and set up a PIN as instructed.
Save the Settings:
- Apply the changes and save the settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel,
Thank you for sending me the steps to set up a pin number.
Attached 2 screenshots for the web browser and one for a printout of the panel menu. Couldn't locate the security options you mentioned. I could select the control panel lockout but then wouldn't be able to make any setting changes using the panel. Browser Screenshot

If you lockout the control panel you should still be able to access functions but you will need to login with the admin credentials first.

Can we step back one step. What is it exactly that you want to do? The term PIN could refer to several different things and I want to make sure I exactly understand what you want.

Thank you for replying.
- There are 2 types of users that we have here, admin and general staff.
- I need admin users to make setting changes using the Web Interface and/or the Printer Control Panel.
- I need both, the web interface and the panel to be password/pin protected.
- I am able to protect the Web interface using the password.
- I could only protect the panel by turning ON the Control Panel Lock. This will deny any changes.

After testing on a unit here and digging around for some documentation, the only way to turn the control panel lock off is through the embedded web server. Keep in mind that this is not an enterprise level product and as such has features more in tune with consumers than business.
This documentation is for the previous model but the firmware is identical https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06309898
If you require advanced settings then likely the e40040 or any one running FutureSmart 5 firmware would be a more suitable choice of printers.
