I just replaced a computer running Windows 8.1 with a new Windows 11 Pro computer, this computer has an HP Laserjet 1536DNF printer attached by a USB cable. The problem I'm having is that I go to the product page for this printer and download the full featured software https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-m1536-multifunction-printer-series/... and once the installation is complete the printer will print and a scan driver is installed but if I right click on the printer and select "Scan" the Windows Scan utility comes up and it has no option to scan to Pdf. I looked and the HP Scan utility doesn't seem to be installed, if I use the HP Print And Scan Doctor and select "I have a scan problem" it checks and then says something like "Scan software not installed, download the full featured software from the HP website and install it" however I've done that multiple times and the software does not install the HP Scanner application. The old Windows 8.1 computer had a desktop link to the HP Scan app and when I searched for that program it doesn't appear to exist on the C: drive on this new computer after installing the full featured software. So how can I fix this if that's not included in the full feature software and not available as a separate download under this printers available software?

During the install of the full version software it says "The following software will be installed on this computer" and in the list is "HP Laserjet M1530 Scan Application" which is certainly not installed:

One of the other threads that I mentioned someone says to try to download and install the HP Scan Extended software that can be found here: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi  which does install the missing software but when you use it, it recognizes the printer that I'm trying to scan from but in turn can't communicate with the scanner:

HP scan recognises printer.jpg

And the imaging device works and diagnostics complete successfully:

The HP Print And Scan Doctor makes a recommendation to "Please save all your works then close applications. Remove power from your device by pulling out the devices power cord. Plug the cord back in, turn the device back on and the click "Restart computer". After the computer restart, run this utility again." however after doing that 2 - 3 times it made no difference and the HP Scan software could still not communicate with the printer:

Yet another post said "Try a different scan app, try the HP Scan and Capture app": https://support.hp.com/ro-en/product/hp-latex-360-printers/6838371/document/c04675206

And when I tried this, this app is able to scan documents from the printer without any problem however the HP Scan app itself still does not work saying that it can't communicate with the printer / scanner. In a way I suppose that the problem is fixed because the person using this computer can now scan but what the heck is going on with the HP Scan application and why doesn't it work properly and why can't the HP Print And Scan Doctor find and fix the problem?

Hi @NormAtHome,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing scanning issues on your HP LaserJet 1536DNF printer.

Please follow the steps listed below to uninstall and reinstall HP Smart App:

Step 1: Uninstall HP Smart App.

1. Navigate to and open Settings

2. Select Apps or Application Manager from the device Settings

3. Select HP Smart

4. Select Uninstall

Step 2: Reinstall HP Smart App.

1. Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS, iPad OS),

or HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows),

or HP Smart - Mac App Store (Mac).

2. Open the HP Smart app.

3. The app searches for recently installed printers.

- If your printer displays, click it. If you are setting up a new printer, it might display with Set-Up under the name.

- If your printer does not display, click the Plus sign, and then follow the on-screen prompts to add your printer or set up a new printer.

First you really didn't answer my question but went and had me uninstall the official HP Full Feature Software and install printer software using HP Smart which doesn't install the same software. First to scan you have to open the HP Smart app:

New Scan Software.JPGSo there's no link anymore directly to the HP Scan app that we used to have on the old computer that's part of the full feature software. Next if we click Scan we get this:

Sign In To Scan.JPG

Why do we have to login or create an account to scan? This is not how it worked with the regular full feature software and we don't want to do this. The full feature software for this printer has a release date of Mar 21, 2022:

20230605_HP 1536 Full Software.jpg

Windows 11 was released Oct 05, 21 so this latest release should support Windows 11 and I would appreciate help getting the correct Full Featured software working rather than this abomination of software installed by HP Smart.
