LaserJet MFP M130nw
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I've just got a new MFP M130nw, after my old LaserJet 4L from the mid-nineties finally gave up.

First, I had some trouble getting the computer to "see" the printer through USB. After battling with the driver, I decided to try Ethernet instead. This seems to be more consistent. However, I still can't print much.

The troubles: Most software can't print. When trying to print a test page (Printer Properties / Print Test Page), I get an error message: "Test page failed to print. Woud you like blah-blah...?" No error message is displayed on the printer.

I have tried using the HP Scan and Print Doctor. This fixes the same issues everytime I run it (Recommended Updates and Port Match), and can print a test page.

Adobe Reader, LibreOffice and UltraEdit cannot print anything. If I watch the print queue while sending a print job, the job shows up very briefly (less than one second), and then disappears. No error message anywhere. Sometimes, when sending a print job from one of these programs (or a Windows test page), the printer seems to run for about three seconds, and then it stops.

Printing from Notepad and an ancient version of ACDSee works nicely.

I've tried uninstalling the printer and the driver numerous times. My only way to uninstall the driver has been through Control Panel / Programs and Features. I haven't been able to find Uninstall_L4.bat anywhere on my computer.

I have run all the Windows Updates that Priscilla mentioned in a different post: KB2775511, KB2732673, KB2728738, KB2878378, KB2647753 and KB2713128. Also added the registry things that she mentioned:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print]
"SNMPLegacy"=dword:00000001
"DisableRpcTcp"=dword:00000001

I've tried switching spooling off and disabling advanced printing features. No difference.

I've gone a bit back and forth between USB and Ethernet. The same problems apply to both connection metods.

One strange thing that I've noticed, which may or may not be a clue, is that Printer Properties / Device Settings reports that the printer has only 32 MB memory. According to the technical specifications, the memory should be 256 MB. But maybe 32 MB is for the printer, and the rest is for the scanner?

By the way, scanning works just fine.

Please – what next?

Problem solved!

I called HP Support yesterday, and talked to this brilliant guy. We did get pdf printing working, by installing Foxit Reader, which could print (while Acrobat Reader couldn't print the exact same files). But we didn't really solve the problem.

Later the same day, he sent me an e-mail, with something to try – and it turned out that this was the source of the problem.

[Drum roll...]

Five years ago, I moved the Windows Temp folder from its usual spot, to the 😧 drive, because the C: drive was nearly exhausted. When I got a larger disk, I never bothered to move the Temp folder back. Somehow, this kept some programs from printing.

The solution:

The environment variables TEMP and TMP must both be set to the "original" path, being

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

For those not familiar with environment variables, they are found in

Control Panel / System / Advanced system settings

Then click the Environment Variables... button in the bottom right corner. In the User variables list, TEMP and TMP must be set as mentioned above.

I just changed the variable settings back to original, rebooted, and printing worked as it should.

[Absolutely indiscreet cymbal crash]

Now me happy man! :generic:

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Flower_Bud is at your service.

As I understand, your printer does not print,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Have you tried performing root level uninstall and reinstalling printer drivers?

If not, let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers.

To reinstall, click here

Let  me know how this goes,

Cheers!

Than you for your reply, @Flower_Bud.

I didn't know about the printui.exe feature. Will try it as soon as I get the chance. :generic:

Hi @Flower_Bud,

(How do you make those "tag links", by the way?)

I did as you suggested, but sadly it didn't change anything.

I've made some observations, that may or may not help:

In printui.exe, I didn't see the new printer. But I removed a number of old printer drivers that I don't need anymore (just in case).

After installing the new driver from your link, I rebooted the computer (again – just in case), and tried printing something from Adobe Reader. As before, the printer sounded like it was preparing to print (motor running) for about three seconds, and then it stopped. No error code or message.

Software that can print:

Notepad

ACDSee (really old version)

Easy-PC (PCB design software, latest version)

Software that doesn't print:

Windows (test page)

Adobe Reader

LibreOffice

IBM Lotus Symphony

Microsoft Word (really old version)

When the computer has just booted, and I try printing with one of the non-printing softwares, the printer makes that 3-second noise. If I try again (with a non-printing software), absolutely nothing happens.

If I then print something with a software that can print, and after that, attempt to print with a non-printing software, I get that 3-second printer noise once more. So the three-second noise can come only once after boot-up, or after actually printing something.

I am at a loss here. Anything else I can try?

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

Have you tried printing using a different PC?

I would suggest try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling using Windows built-in drivershttps://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879.

If the issue persists, create a new user account and then install printer drivers.

I am able to create the tag links with the tool we use here 😉

@Flower_Bud:

Well, I really appreciate that you spend the time... after all, it is my problem that you are trying to solve.

No, I haven't tried printing with a different PC. Unfortunately, I don't have a different PC to try it with.

I will try the Windows built-in drivers when I have some extra time.

@Flower_Bud:

Removed the printer and the drivers, including the trick with printui.exe.

Installed the "Windows" printer driver, the good old Windows way.

Sadly, it made no difference at all.

Do you have any ideas left? New printer firmware?

If I make a wild guess, could the printer be defective? To me, it doesn't sound realistic. I mean, I can print text and graphics from some programs. So to me, it sounds more like a driver issue. Or some sort of incompatibility with something in or connected to my computer.

Does anything spring to mind?

Or do I finally give up? Throw in the towel? Accept my utter defeat?

Tiny update:

I checked the firmware date code, which was 20170710.

Tried updating through the network connection. The software ended wil smiley face, but date code wasn't changed.

Switched to USB port, and attempted update again. This time the firmware update actually worked, and the firmware date code is now 20180510.

However, this doesn't seem to have any effect on the printing abilities. Firmware update didn't solve the problem.
