HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Hello! My HP Office Jet Pro 6978  (all in one wireless printer ) was working fine then I received a message black ink was running low.  I went to change ink cartridge and the machine has NO POWER.  I did a disconnect/complete reset and still... NO Power.  Also, tested other devices in the outlet and they working fine...so, no outlet problem.

Any advise including other troubleshooting steps will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @Roz1008 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer is not powering on, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try and resolve the issue. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Check Power Connection:

  • Ensure that the power cable is securely connected to both the printer and the power outlet.
  • Test the power outlet with another device to confirm that it is working.

Power Reset:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

Try a Different Power Source:

  • Plug the printer into a different power outlet to rule out issues with the current outlet.

Check Power Adapter:

  • If your printer uses an external power adapter, make sure it is connected properly.
  • Inspect the power adapter for any damage.

Inspect for Physical Damage:

  • Check the power cord and the printer for any visible signs of physical damage.

Remove Additional Devices:

  • Disconnect any additional devices (USB drives, memory cards, etc.) from the printer and try turning it on again.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Ensure that there are no paper jams or foreign objects obstructing the printer's internal components.

Check for Indicator Lights:

  • Some printers have indicator lights that provide information about the power status. Check if there are any lights on the printer.

Update Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model on the HP support website. Updating the firmware may resolve certain issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-

HI @ aseph7,

Thank you for your reply!

I can certainly try to help you with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 power issue and your HP ENVY 6400 printer password reset.

HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 Power Issue:

Check Power Source:

  • Make sure the printer is connected to a working power source.
  • Verify that the power cable is securely plugged into the printer and the electrical outlet.

Power Cycle:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the electrical outlet.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Test Different Outlet:

  • Try plugging the printer into a different electrical outlet to ensure that the outlet is not the issue.

Check for Damage:

  • Examine the power cord for any visible damage. If damaged, consider replacing it.

HP Support:

  • If the issue persists, it's recommended to contact HP support for further assistance.

HP ENVY 6400 Printer Password Reset:

If you have set a custom password on your HP ENVY 6400 printer and forgot it, you may need to perform a factory reset. Keep in mind that a factory reset will erase all personalized settings, including the password. Here are the steps.

Access the Control Panel:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Settings or Setup menu.

Restore Factory Defaults:

  • Look for an option like "Restore Defaults," "Reset," or "Factory Reset" in the settings menu.

Confirm the Action:

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm that you want to restore the printer to factory defaults.

Restart the Printer:

  • After the reset is complete, restart the printer.

Reconfigure:

  • You will need to set up your printer again, including connecting it to your network. Refer to the printer manual for detailed instructions.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
