A 8/29/2024 response from an HP employeed named Alden4 offered 4 suggestions for getting a Laserjet p1006 printer to work on a Windows 11 machine with an ARM architecture (the Microsoft Surface Laptop):

1) Windows Update Automatic Driver Installation

  • Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional Updates.
  • Look for any available drivers for the HP LaserJet P1006 and install them.
  • Restart your computer and check if the printer works.

                   => None Found

2) Use a Generic Print Driver

Since HP's drivers may not be compatible with ARM systems, you can try installing a generic PCL or PostScript driver that may work:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer.
  • Select The printer I want isn’t listed.
  • Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
  • In the Use an existing port section, select the appropriate port (usually USB for your printer).
  • When prompted to install a driver, select Generic from the list and try a Generic PCL or PostScript driver.
  • Complete the installation and test printing.

=> None of those are listed

3) Consider a Print Server or Cloud Printing

If the above steps don’t work, another option is to use a print server or a cloud printing solution:

  • Use another PC (Windows, macOS, or Linux) as a print server by connecting the HP LaserJet P1006 to that machine, sharing it over the network, and printing from your Windows 11 ARM laptop via the network.

=> This solution still requires having a printer driver on my laptop

4) Check for Virtualization or Compatibility Mode

If your ARM-based laptop supports x86 emulation or virtualization, you may be able to install an x86 version of Windows or use a virtual machine to install the required drivers.

=> My laptop supports x86 emulation, but I can't get to the point where the driver installs

At this point I don't know what else to try. HP, please port the driver to the ARM-based architecture and provide us with a solution. The Laserjet p1006 is an excellent printer which I've used for years and which I would like to continue using!!

Hi FerRX,

Many thanks for answering.

Can you help me with instructions for installing the driver? I've tried a number of things but haven't figured it out yet.

Thanks

Hi @mexscrabbler,

Please follow its user guide below to install the printer, see page 27 of the user guide with detailed installation steps:

https://kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public/pdf_1263018_en-US-1.pdf

Note: be sure not to plug the USB in advance, if it is already plugged, be sure to unplug the cable and restart the computer in prior.

ShlomiL,

Thanks for responding. I was able to install the software using pnputil as per p. 27.

However, when I attach the printer via a USB port, the software installation doesn't proceed. When I look in printers&scanners, I see an entry for the Laserjet p1006, but says the driver is unavailable. If I click on Find Drivers, I'm taken to this page, which is pretty useless: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-download-and-install-the-latest-printer-drivers-4.... I try to uninstall the HP Laserjet p1006 entry, but it doesn't uninstall.

If I open devmgmt.msc and open USB controllers, I see an entry for "Hewlett-Packard HP Laserjet p1006", and if I right-click and select Update Driver, if I choose "Search automatically" it tells me the best driver is already installed: "USB Printing Support". If instead I choose browse my computer for drivers, I navigate to where I installed the SUPD-4.07-1.3204-V4-ARM.zip (after unzipping), again i'm told the best driver is already installed.

I also tried HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.7.4. This software find the LJ printer on the USB port and correctly states it is "Not Installed." If I click Next, the s/w communicates with the printer and then says "The full s/w solution for your product is not installed on this computer" and the presents me with a large blue "Get Installed" button. If I click that button, I'm redirected to "https://support.hp.com/us-en" which is where I can download the SUPD-4.07-1.3204-V4-ARM.zip  file... However, I can't go any further using the P Print and Scan Doctor 5.7.4 software.

I'm in a circular loop. 😞

Any guidance appreciated!

Hi @mexscrabbler

Ok, then try with the next driver:

Hi FerRX,

Thanks again for trying to help! I've executed the new file and it creates a folder in the C: called HP_LJ4101-4104 with several folders underneath. I've tried pointing to that location when trying to specify the drivers to be used by my printer, but I can't get it to install. Is there a way to preinstall the drivers manually?

At this point, this is what the HP Print and Scan doctor 5.7.4 reports it sees:

I'm not sure how to remove those 3 drivers and install the new one you've pointed me to.

Any guidance appreciated!

Hi @mexscrabbler

Ok, if that doesn´t work, then try with the next steps:

1.  First connect your printer with a USB cable to your computer.

2.  Then follow steps from the next video:

Hello FerRX,

The video you referred me to is for a standard installation of a printer that is automatically recognized by Windows as a known printer for which a driver is available. However, as I've tried to make clear in all of my previous discussions, the problem is that my Microsoft Surface (ARM-based) running Windows 11 does not have access to a suitable driver.

Thanks,

Hi @mexscrabbler

Yes, I understand the issue with Microsoft Surface laptop computers, these Surface computers with ARM processors are having several issues with software drivers for printers, in all brands, not only for HP.

(and Microsoft is aware of that 🤔)

Please remember that I am a volunteer in this forum. 😇

Right now I don´t have access to a Surface computer, that is why I am like walking in the dark, only trying to guess what is the best path to find solution.

Another option could be to Add Printer manually, select Local Printer and in the Window

for Manufacturer select HP and in the Printers search for some drivers like:

  • HP PCL3 - V4 driver.

or try also with Manufacturer select Microsoft  and in the Printers - Microsoft PCL6 driver
