I saw this previous post and tried removing and re-adding the printer - but I still don't see a Color print option.
Essentially I have a Laserjet M252dw - and installed the latest driver from this website, in order to enable the Duplex printing option.
But when I select File Print, there is no option shown for selecting Print in colour toggle on/off - which means all my printouts are in colour - wasting colour toner.
On some YouTube videos or help pages, it shows a 'Print in Color' toggle switch just below the Pages section - but none appears on mine.
Can someone please advise how to set Grayscale printing?
Thanks

Thanks.
I am new to MacOS, so even after I installed the official HP driver, I did not realise I was still using the default MAC driver - the same printer was listed twice as two different printers with slightly different names.
Once I selected the printer using the HP Driver it worked fine.

Hi @harryw66 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're facing an issue with the color print option missing from the print dialog on macOS Sonoma for your HP Laserjet M252dw printer. This can be particularly frustrating if you want to control whether to print in color or grayscale to save toner.
Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Check Printer Settings in System Preferences:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP Laserjet M252dw printer from the list.
- Click on Options & Supplies.
- Check if there is a "Driver" tab and ensure that the correct driver is selected.
Reset the Printing System:
- Sometimes resetting the printing system can help.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer list and select Reset printing system.
- This will remove all printers from the list, so you will need to re-add your printer.
Add Printer Using Generic PostScript Driver:
- When re-adding your printer, try using the "Generic PostScript Printer" driver instead of the HP-specific driver. This can sometimes resolve issues with missing print options.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > + to add a printer.
- Select your printer from the list.
- Choose "Select Software" and then "Generic PostScript Printer".
Use HP Easy Admin:
- HP provides a tool called HP Easy Admin that can help ensure you have the correct drivers and software installed.
- Download and install HP Easy Admin from the HP website.
- Use the tool to configure your printer and check if the color print option appears.
Check for Software Updates:
- Make sure your macOS and the HP printer software are fully updated.
- Go to System Preferences > Software Update to check for macOS updates.
- Visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers and software for your printer.
Check Application-Specific Print Dialog:
- Some applications have their own print settings that might override system settings.
- When you go to File > Print in the application you're using, click on Show Details (if available) to expand the print dialog and look for color settings.
Additional Tips
Print in Black & White by Default:
- If you find that the color option still does not appear, you can set your printer to print in black and white by default in the printer settings.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer, then click on Options & Supplies > Driver.
- Look for an option to set default printing preferences.
Refer to this document: HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw User manual
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
