I am trying to install an HP Laserjet 1320 printer on a new Windows 11 computer. I saw some posts on this forum and followed them about installing the HP Universal driver PCL 5 . Here is the instructions I followed from Elohi_NR - https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/I-want-to-download-driver-for-HP-Laserj... -
Try the following solution:
- Download and then run (UPD PCL 5):
- This driver if the Windows version is 64-bit.
- This driver if the Windows version is 32-bit.
- Select the Traditional Mode, and then click on Next.
- Select the Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, and then click Next.
- Click the Use an existing port drop-down list and select DOT4_001: (HP Print Device), then click Next.
- Under Printers, select HP Universal Printing PCL 5, and then click Next.
- The Printer name field, type HP LaserJet 1320 series, and then click Next.
- Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
- Try to print.
My problem is when I get to the part of choosing an existing port, I do not see the option of DOT4_001: (HP Print Device). Here is what is displayed:
LPT1: (Printer Port)
LPT2: (Printer Port)
LPT3: (Printer Port)
COM1: (Serial Port)
COM2: (Serial Port)
COM3: (Serial Port)
COM4: (Serial Port)
FILE: (Print to File)
nul: (Local Port)
PORTPROMPT: (Local Port)
Please let me know if you have a suggestion or solution. Thanks.

I wanted to do an update to my post. I was able to get the HP LaserJet 1320 to work with Windows 11 Pro (at this time). I was able to do this with the help of a number of different posts on this forum. I want to thank all of them for their help including User "REPAIRATROOPER" who gave me a lot of help.
I needed 2 files, a USB communications port driver and a universal printer driver.
The first thing to do is get the HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communications port driver for Windows 8 and higher (64-bit):
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL44939/fp-148007-1/Dot4x64.msi
Download the .msi file. Before running the file to install the software, be sure that your printer is NOT connected to the computer. This will install the USB port driver that the printer driver needs. If you try to install the universal printer driver without doing this, you will not see the port option that the print driver needs.
The second thing to do is get the file that is the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL5 (64-bit). Note that you need the PCL5 driver for the HP 1320 printer. I found the link in 2 posts:
https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/PRINTER/HP/HP-Universal-Print-Driver-PCL5-61020062-64-bit.shtml
Before doing the steps below, be sure your printer IS connected to the computer and powered up.
I believe it was User "MANS" that gave the next steps (step 1 I mentioned above for the 64 bit driver):
As a solution, I suggest that you use a universal printing driver.
Try the following solution:

- Select the Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, and then click Next.
- Click the Use an existing port drop-down list and select DOT4_001: (HP Print Device), then click Next.
- Under Printers, select HP Universal Printing PCL 5, and then click Next.
- The Printer name field, type HP LaserJet 1320 series, and then click Next.
- Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
- Try to print.
In addition, the HP 1320 can do duplex printing but when I installed the UPD PCL 5 driver, it does not show it as an option. User "DANSDADUK" gave the solution I used:
The 'automatic discovery' feature used by some (Windows) drivers on installation (or update) doesn't always work; ensure that the driver knows that a duplex unit is present on the printer (assuming that one is present):
- For the printer instance in question, bring up the Printer properties dialogue.
- Select the Device settings tab.
- Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.
You'll probably need to be logged in with administrator credentials in order to change the device settings.
I hope these steps are accurate (from my memory and notes) and help others. These steps have allowed my HP LaserJet 1320 to work with Windows 11 Pro. Thanks again for all the people who took the time to post and help all of us.

The issue is that the UPD PCL 5 driver is outdated and does not include the Dot4 required files. It used to be posted but have not seen online. I may have it archived. The other option is you could try the Smart Universal Printer Driver which does have a USB install version but not sure it will support the 1320.

Repairatrooper, thank you for your reply. It was really helpful especially since I saw one of your other posts earlier while looking for the answer - https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/HP-LaserJet-1320-on-Windows-11-system-n... - where you put the file in DropBox. Unfortunately I cannot access the file with DropBox but it gave me the file name - Dot4x64.msi . I searched using that name and found a couple of reputable places (Bleeping Computer and Micro Center forum) which gave a link to the file.
I have never worked with an .msi file so I will read up on it. I have been more top level when I use Windows. Also I realize there is no guarantee that Windows 11 will be happy to use the drivers. Also I don't know if I am supposed to have the printer already hooked up to the computer when I start everything. Sometimes with theses devices, Windows does not want me to connect the printer to the USB cable until a certain point in the installation process.
Thanks again.

Do not have the printer connected before you install the .msi file.

Yes that is the correct order.
